Michael;

  win model 61 s,l,lr; grooved reciever; sn-263,988.Maybe you could answer a couple questions for me on this rifle. It reads with a long dash than 22 LR,then long dash.Then below the 22 LR it reads; L. OR S. I never saw this before. Is it factory done? Can you explain why they did it?

thanks, doug

p.s. I bought the model 61 with slings off you; it is a tack driver. thanks.

Hello Doug,

I am glad that you are pleased with the rifle you purchased from me.  I had shot it a bit and it is as you say.  Deadly accurate!

With regard to the barrel markings on SN 263988, Winchester changed the style and position of the chamber designation multiple times on the Model 61 rifles.   Please post a photo of the markings on the barrel.  I also have not seen that style.

Sorry,don’t know how to post pictures on here.If you text me your phone number,I think I can send them that way.Someone told me that there were leftover long rifle barrels and they just stamped that underneath to sell the guns as s.l.and lr. Don’t know if that is fact or not.

Good morning Doug,

Here is the photo you sent me.  I must say I have never seen a caliber stamp like that after looking at more than 4500 Model 61 rifles.  It is obvious that the second line was added later and the bluing was altered as a result.

Michael

It obvious, someone got tired of trying to answer questions of why it couldn’t take S or L if it could take LR. ?

Hello Robert,

Thanks for the information.  Can you tell me if the muzzle face is cut perfectly flat or is it slightly rounded or crowned?

I always get suspicious regarding “original” boxed guns (too many fakes out there–“Selling Dad’s” ruined that market), but this one looks good to me.

Thoughts?

I am already suspicious.  Right off the bat that is not the brochure that came with that 61, it is the early Winchester version and should be the Olin marked version for that late gun.  Like this one –
