Hi Gary,
Here’s another 1894 short rifle on GB. Was wondering if you have it in your survey.

Has this one made the list?
Unfortunately, the seller does not disclose the complete serial number.
Hi Gary,
I came across this one on Gunbroker. Have it in your survey? It also has the unusual patent date barrel marking.

That’s a new one I hadn’t come across. Its a great looking little rifle, and fairly scarce. I will have to watch that one to see if it sells cheap, considering its condition.
And weren’t the patent date errors usually found on the carbines and round barrel ELW’s? I will have to look for the thread on this subject.
Thanks Don.

Thanks Harry, I didn’t have 214893. The other one I had logged from previous discussions, I believe.

Hi Gary,
Glad to add one to the survey. Regarding the patent date marking, the August 21, 1894 date is correct. It’s just stamped on a line by itself on the top barrel flat. This is an instance when the patent date was omitted from the top tang and moved to the barrel markings. However, the barrel that was used was of the older style marking that did not include the patent date, so it was added in a one-liner on the top barrel flat. A bit unusual.

Thanks for clearing that up. Without putting much thought into it, I was thinking you meant the error dates. Yes, the position of the marking is strange. I think I remember hearing about that in the past, but it was very much buried in my small memory bank. Good stuff!

And here is another one. This one with an octagon barrel, originated from the same collection as the other one, Senator Frederic C Walcott: https://live.amoskeagauction.com/m/lot-details/index/catalog/28/lot/18200?url=%2Fm%2Fview-auctions%2Fcatalog%2Fid%2F28

That’s a more interesting one, with the ELW octagon barrel and 3/4 mag. The I checkered plain stock is a nice, less common feature too.
New to the survey ……. thanks.

And here’s yet another example from that same auction. No 366663.
Another new one to survey. That’s a great looking deluxe w/ the crescent butt. Seems like most of these sold cheap too.
Thank you.

Pertaining to the three I presented from that recent auction, what do you think they each should be worth, if you think one or more sold cheaply? I don’t know how much of a premium a short rifle brings, and also what any special order features add to the valuation.
