I don’t have that serial number yet. Is it full length mag and crescent butt? Is the fore end length 8 3/8″ and rear sight 4″ from the receiver? Do you have a letter on it? Any other features?

SN 9031, 20″ octagon barrel, full length magazine, crescent butt, smooth straight stock, dovetailed front sight, dovetailed rear buckhorn sight, from what points are you measuring fore end and rear sight? Appears to be a 9 3/8″ forearm. Mfg 1895
I do not have a letter on this one yet. It does have checkered hammer, take down model, all patina. Top barrel marking is faint stamp, Manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company New Haven Conn USA.

The fore-end measurement is just the wood measurement between the frame and the nose cap. It sounds like you have the long wood, which makes it a bit suspect but not necessarily incorrect. Only about 20% of the short rifles surveyed have the longer (standard length) wood. With the 9 3/8″ wood, your rear sight dovetail should be 5″ from the frame. A Cody search would clear up whether its original or not. If it is, that’s quite a cool rifle being an early 20″ TD in 38-55. Maybe post some pictures if you get time.

Serial number 1248 is the lowest serial number I have with a “short” barrel. It is a First Model, and I believe that was “first” Model 1894 “Short” rifle manufactured. I have attached an old CFM research sheet with the ledger information…

The attachment is a PDF, and you have to actually click on it to open it. I sent you an email with the same attachment (which is a CFM research sheet).

Yes I do and I have it noted from the CGCA show. I recall logging a couple of yours and maybe one that belonged to a friend of yours from that show.

I believe you have this rifle, ser. #667126, in your list. I thought I would add pictures with the saddle scabbard it came with. 38-55 ca. 16″ Nickel Steel barrel. It has the 7 3/8″ forend. Roger B.

Yes, I had that one listed but don’t think I’ve ever seen it before. That’s leaning towards the Holy Grail for shorties. Very cool and thanks for sharing. I love it.
