…only 1876 rifle I've ever owned is a British Proofed, 40-60WCF, 22" Short Rifle, this has the Rarest Winchester Front Sight, with only mine (1) known to…

…. "Reversible Front Sight", 1882-83 Winch. catalog). It also has a 4 leaf "express rear sight", and an odd British?, rear tang sight. This 1876 will be auctioned off at Poulin's in their November 2022 auction.

…list Bill has is a continuation of an 1876 Winchester survey given to me long ago by Jim Gordon.  Since then, I have probably doubled the number of guns compared to  the list when Jim passed…

…guns.  Bill is the perfect guy to carry this forward and I will help all I can.  He and I have both had a long running love affair with the 1876 models.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here are two photos of Beach combination sights, one folded down on a Winchester Model 1876 and one with globe folded up but not on rifle

…this year, but two or three of my Winchesters may be. I don't know if Poulin Auctions attend the Cody Show. If they do, my "Historic" 1866 Carbine, 1876 Short Rifle, and my 1873 Smooth Bore might be on display there. They go on auction in November. In any case hope all's as well as can be. From

…here...I wonder if the Winchester records at Cody are in database form.  In other words, would they be able to do a search of the Model 1876 records for rifles with the features you know that letter?  All .40-60 rifles with chequered stock with pistol grip (only 268), 30 inch octagon

…noticed the same thing.  The sight on the far left has an elevator that was exclusive to the model 1876 .50 Express caliber.  It has been my observation that these elevators only, have markings starting on the highest position  3, 2 1/2, 2, and 1 1/2…

…the only elevators I have seen that have a "V" notch in the highest position.  I have never seen this particular sight on anything other that the 1876 model in .50 Express caliber.   Having said that, this does not mean that this is the only correct sight for the 1876 in .50 Express.  I have had…

…several that lettered with the later 3 leaf Express sight and a few others with the standard long leaf rear sight, marked 1876.  Very nice selection of sights Bill and great to see you in the Springs.

…my own modest collection I pulled out four sporting rear sights that would have been common on 1873, 1876, single shot, 1886 and 1892 sporting rifles.  Not sure about later models.  I think some of the later 1866 rifles used the sporting rear sight as

… I remember when Tom Selleck was buying 1876's at Las Vegas for one of his movies. He was with George Madias, he told me they needed 4 guns, one was for close-ups, one to throw off the wagon,

…that 1878 catalog was released the only cartridge available for the Model 1876 was .45-75.  The Winchester Express (.50-95) and .45-60 were introduced in 1879.

Also, as has been previously discussed, the 45-100…

…the exact date.  I have a September 1882 catalog that still has the 44-100 reference.  The April 1886 catalog just shows caliber as .45 for the 1876.  Then at the bottom near the price list it says "This model can be furnished adapted to Central Fire Cartridges .45-75, .45-60, or .40-60."

…Tim,

thank you for your answer,

I had already read about that "single shot" proposition for the model 1876 (probably here to be honest ), but after digging a bit further, one of my friend may have found the solution on another page of the same catalog:

…loaded round out of the rifle if it was not fired as the length exceeds the length of the opening for the elevator, etc.  Look in the book on the 1876 by Herb Houze and he has a drawing of the subject cartridge with a short discussion.  The subject cartridge was not loaded very long.  I suspect it

in a discussion about 1876 rifles, somebody posted a copy of the 1878 catalog presenting the model 76.

It is presented as shooting a 45-100 cartridge, wen I thought the 2

…Don,

I have owned two rifles that have this sight.  Both are 1876 Express rifles.  I don't have any stellar knowledge on how to avoid breaking the leaves.  I get fingernails of both hands under the leaf on each

…even possibly the 2nd Model Molds. I think the 1874 Tool being found in 45 Colt speaks to this possibility.  They first cataloged 45 Colt in the 1876 Catalog. The 1874 cartridge board, also known as the Rimfire board, has the rimfire version of the 45 Colt on it. The next board made the 1879

…15 and 16 inch barrel lengths - and this is just a small selection of what was in there.  Back to the topic, in that catalog there was also a Model 1876 .50-95 that really caught my eye.  A very special, very high condition deluxe rifle with numerous special order features including engraved forend
