Don,
If this is an original box it should have the manufactures symbol on the bottom of the box.
i have several and are marked Atlantic container in a circular logo. It should have an identifying stamp A 1017 H 34.
In my opinion the hang tag is wrong. Starting in the mid fifties winchester started using specific tags as to which model and symbol number. In this case the symbol number would be 6116.
The end label should indicate 6116 in the upper right hand corner.

Hello,
I know Mike Clark who owns Collector’s Firearms and sent him an email (I am on vacation in Michigan and away from my home in Houston) that expressed a few reservations about this rifle. The DOM is 1962 but by Schwing’s work the .22 LR Shot only was last offered during 1959. My last noted .22 LR Shot Only is at SN 290226 during early 1960. I have cataloged 1145 rifles after 290226 and this is the only other Shot Only rifle.

Hello,
Thanks for the info on the two rifles. SN 39756 is DOM of 1938. SN 328346 is DOM of 1962. Both are configured correctly for their SN range.

Hello Michael,
Picked up another 61 yesterday,
Serial# is—221178
Chambered S-L-LR
Round barrel
Checkered steel butt plate
Grooved receiver
Tang is NOT D&T
No W below serial #
It’s a shooter too…….. Quickly mounted a Burris Timberline 4.5-14AO on it. Warm fall day here so sighted it in. Cluster fly’s were out and kept landing on the target box I sighted in on. Shot several Fly’s at 30 yards.
Best,
Erin

Good morning Gary,
I had the magnum but the standard gun is new to the survey. Does it have a checkered steel or plastic butt plate?

Model 61 for your survey
22 S L LR
serial #271934
grooved receiver
not DT
checkered steel butt plate
I know from reading previous posts this serial number range should have a composite butt plate. This gun is in 95+ condition and I am very confident it hasn’t been touched. There is #68 stamped on butt of stock as well as the plate. I do not know what this stands for maybe you can educate me on it
Thanks Mike

Hello Mike,
I saw that gun listed in a Cabela’s previously. The change from checkered steel to plastic butt plates began in late 1958 but there is the occasional rifle in later 1959 that still have the steel ones. I am sure it is original.
Thanks

Michael,
Info for your Model 61 survey on rifle I acquired today:
Serial# 138151
Round barrel
-MODEL 61-22 S,L, OR L.R-
Upper tang not drilled
W not present
Checkered steel butt plate
No groove on top of receiver
The rifle appears to be in unfired or very lightly used condition with no discernable blemishes. Any thoughts on this one?

Good morning Big Mac,
Your rifle was one of the first dozen which were manufactured during 1950. The last serialized receiver in 1949 is 138140. Based on your description it is correct for the serial number range. Thanks so much for the information.
