What Win4575 wrote applies to me as well.  I loaded some .40-60 WCF cartridges for an 1876 rifle using an original 1880 tool and bullets from an original 1878 iron mold.  I used resized and trimmed W-W .45-70 brass.  I find that the W…

If the tools are in good shape you should not have any trouble at all . In fact it's real easy . I have loaded all four of the 1876 Winchester calibers using the original tools and of course Bp. along with the 38wcf 44wcf and a few others . No problem . In the 40-60 wcf with

… good to hear from you!  I, as well, have the tools and the moulds for many of my early models 1873 and 1876.  The closest I have come to using them tho is casting the .45 caliber bullets in the mould marked for the .45-75.  I used Rapine mould prep on

…ledgers having errors.

In my 1981 edition of George Madis' "The Winchester Handbook" he states on page 55 that in the warehouse records for 1876 rifle serial numbers 4480-4489 it is noted that they should have "handle bent down like mouser (sic) rifle..."  A look at the Hotchkiss records

…very different.

The 50-95 is a shorter fatter cartridge than the straight long 50-110. The 50-95 was made for the short action of a 1876 and will not fit in a 1886 that uses the 50-110, a longer cartridge with a smaller diameter. The confusion started with the term Express. When…

…Winchester came out with the 50-95 for the 1876 they called it the 50 Express. Later when they made the 1886 in 50-110 they called it Winchester Express 50-110-300. Marking on barrels and…

…loading tools got shorten and the term "Express" no longer meant only a  1876, they added the bullet diameter and powder charge.

As Burt said "they are dimensionally very different". T/R

…- Octagon" it is assumed to be the standard length barrel for the particular model of gun.  Does this really mean that, for example, a Winchester 1876 standard rifle with a shorter than 28" barrel (standard length) is incorrect because the letter does not list the shorter length?  I ask because I

Nice looking cartridges.  I've always liked the looks of the .45-75.  I would rather my M1876 .45-60 (and my Whitney-Kennedys in .45-60) were in .45-75.

…Winchester catalogs currently available from Cornell Publishing.  This info is in all of the early catalogs from the Henry era through the 1876.  I think the one I used was the 1875 which is in Volume I of the 12 Volume set.  Winchester did not manufacture any of these guns with the set

To be clear I’m looking for the Winchester 1876, 1877, and/or March 1878 Catalogs. Which are noted as having been made by Ron Stadt in a series of articles in our very own WACA Collector Magazine…

…the catalogs.

On page 24 of the Spring 1985 Collector his article lists all three of these Catalogs as been made by Winchester. He notes the “1876 catalog”, the “1877 Catalog Revised price list March 1, first to list Model 1876”, and “March 1, 1878 Catalog 50 pages Replica Exists”.

I…

…have a replica of the MAY 1878 catalog issued in 1966 by the Olin Mathison Chemical Corporation. And a while back I purchased Cornell’s “January 1876 Catalog.” Which I don’t know where they got that date from, or who supplied it to them. As it is an exact copy, and I mean exact with no changes…

…whatsoever, of the 1875 Catalog shown in Vol. 1 of the 1991 Armory Publications 10 Volume Set. Which in my opinion Cornell’s can not be a January 1876 Catalog as on page 61 it shows the 1874 Reloading Tool and not the 1875 Reloading Tool. There is a 1st Issue & a 2nd Issue of the 1875 Catalog.

… etc.  At that time is was attributed to a "private collection".  At one time Ed had the finest collection of 1 of 100 and 1 of 1000 1873s AND 1876s.  He quietly divested himself of his treasures years ago and I expect someone else may have placed many of these back together.  I miss talking

…the $300,000 bidder had lost his mind, I think even the auctioneer was surprised when it took off from there. I didn’t realize there was a 1/100 1876, imagine what one with some condition could bring.

…does not fit around the receiver well.  I suppose it's not a fair comparison as the W-K was more in competition with the Winchesters M1873 and M1876.  Even with that, a '73 Winchester is easy to carry.  The '76 is more of a challenge.

The other exception is people who turn them into the police. In that case they are destroyed. I shudder to think of how many 1873's, 1866's, 1876's, 1885's, 1886's, etc. have suffered that horrible fate due to the ignorance of the heirs. It wouldn't surprise me if a few deluxe 1886's have
