Model 61 smooth bore/ shot shell only. Number 7106. How scarce are shot shell only ? Round barrel
Hello Randy,
I saw thid rifle in the auction listing. The Model 61 was not offered with a smooth bore in this serial number range. My guess is the barrel is not original to the gun.

Randy,
Look at the serial number closely. It should be centered on the bottom of the receiver not off to one side as if the first or last digit may be removed. The upper tang should be D&T with two small screws. Changing a barrel is easy.

This is what I seen on # 7106 number is correct and in right spot. W on top of barrel and receiver. 2 small screws toward front top of receiver. Something done on top tang almost looked like rivots and then ground a little ? Barrel address on the side of barrel in the middle. Steel butt plate , round barrel.
The other gun was 298523, rubber butt plate round barrel, grooves on top no screws and barrel address at back end of barrel on the side. Both with good wood and metal condition. THANKS For YOUR HELP

Owner said he had owned for 30 years and had bought it from a older gentleman that he said he could not imagine had done any change.
I also bet that the “older gentleman” lived on some ocean front property in Nebraska. Based on your description the rifle just was not correct. I would have loved to have seen some photos of it.

Hello FLT
The rifle was serialized in the last few days of 1948. Most likely it was fully assembled during January of 1949. Thanks for the info.

Good morning Grant,
Thanks for the information on your rifle. I will gladly enter it into the survey. I need to clarify the Chamber designation. You state it is marked .22 RF. Is it actually .22 WRF? Is there a “W” stamped just a bit below the serial numbers on the receiver?
Thanks so much for your effort,
Michael
