Johnny,
The “L” prefix tells us that it was serialized sometime in late 1968 or later (to be in compliance with the GCA of 1968). I have no idea on the production number. The WACA focus is on Pre-1964 production Winchester firearms.

Just picked up a Winchester 1200 and the barrel says “riot” on it. Not sure if it’s manufactured year. Has a serial# of L559368. Can you please tell me the date. Are these more rare or less produced?
The company we reluctantly call “Winchester” made quite a few riot guns and they are by no means rare. They are quite well made and since the price is generally reasonable I keep a few stashed in various places as “social equipment”. Every now and then I get a wild hair and shoot a round or two of skeet with one.

Hello all, it’s been a while since I was on this board. My neighbor gifted me a model 1200 with SN 485702. Based on what Bert has said about the L prefix can I assume this is probably one of the last ones made in 1968 without the L?Thanks, -Chris
Yes. The L prefix to the serial number began sometime around the last couple of months of 1968.. So your shotgun was made just prior to that time.

Hello, I can see Burt has a lot of information about this 1200 models, thank you Sir for taking the time to help us. I have a Winchester 1200 with a serial number L625168, is there a way to know the year ? Thanks !
I would estimate it to be late in the year 1970, possibly early 1971.

Hello Bert,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on these guns.
I just procured a Winchester Stainless Marine 12GA., with serial no. of L18954xx.
There is no indication whether this is a Model 1200 or 1300…
Would you know the approx. date of manuf and what model it would be, please?
Thank you Sir in advance!
