Jim,
Late 1981. The “steel” versus “stainless” steel is a person preference. For those that hunt in wet nasty environments, the stainless steel barrel is probably preferred. If you hunt upland game, the blued steel barrel is nicer (in my opinion).
Model 1200 shotguns are very seldom worth more than $250, especially in used condition.

Greetings! I have recently received a Winchester Model 1200 12 gauge with a serial number of L119884. I was curious about the relative age of this shotgun. Any information would be greatly appreciated.Robert L.
Hello Robert,
The “L” prefix on the serial number indicates that it was manufactured after the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 was enacted into law. I suspect that you missed one digit in the serial number (it should have seven numerals vice six).

Could you tell me what year a Winchester Model 1200 serial# L761481 was made?
John,
There are no published DOM lists for the time period (serial number range) you are asking about. All I can say with certainty is “sometime after November 1968 and before December 1975”.
