Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the update!

I have all of those numbers logged as previously owned by another gentleman.

I have not talked to him in quite awhile and hope he is doing ok.

I purchased a Model 57 today.

Have not had it apart to see the barrel code. It is serial 16493, 22LR. It has the Lyman peep sight, folding rear sight, sling swivels (no sling). No other checkering, engraving etc.

For those that are monitoring this survey I have updated the initial posting and included the excerpt from the Winchester Instructions for the Model 57 for download.

Thanks again to all that have shared their information!

Yes, it is D&T’d for Lyman 438 Field scope and last sold at the Cady auction on Dec. 4, 2022.

Thanks though!

Best Regards,

PS, did you see 22983 on Gunbroker this week?  I believe it might be close to your serial number 😉

Yes, I bought it for reasons unknown to me Confused………… maybe just to learn something and eventually throw on the table at a show. I will get a barrel date when I get a chance. Maybe 1930?

I’m assuming the scope was added later but seems to be period correct and possibly the best option at the time? Were there any M57’s with factory scopes, and if so, did they lack open sights? Just curious as I’m not sure if I’ll keep it or not. I will probably pop a few rounds thru it in my basement crawlspace range for a News Years celebration.

Nope – didn’t see 22983 but I really don’t look for them actively. It’s in the neighborhood of my #23850 rifle I’ve have had quite a while.

Extra info for #19460 –

Barrel date is ’28

Proof marks are rolled to the side as opposed to #23850 having them on top.

I ran 5 rounds thru this rifle using the Lyman 438 scope and was pleasantly surprised that they were all touching and made one oversized hole of about 3/8″. This was right on the bull as well. I was only shooting at ~30 ft. but sure was pleasing to shoot right out of the box from the auction house. The scope knobs were froze up when I got it but about 5 minutes of Kroil soaking and they freed up. I was careful to put them back fairly close to how I found them and found that the rifle was perfectly sighted in from the previous owner/shooter. Pretty darn amazing for a 90-year-old rifle and scope combo that just beat its way thru the Fedex holiday trip.

Gary,

That is a fine looking & shooting rifle!  With good (match grade) ammo, it might shoot that same group size at much further distances.

Hi Daniel,

That is indeed a new entry and fits in nicely with other .22 Shorts with close serial numbers.

Thanks for sharing the info!

I have a 57 SN 8636 original finish on metal and wood. Flip up sight and factory peep. Marked follower mag. My 56 is SN 13583 metal and wood refinished. Scope added. The underside of the barrel has a circled B 217 in front of the action screw. Behind the action screw 27rni got both of them at a gun show they were both on the same table. rn

Hi Bret,

Thanks for the info!  What caliber (.22 Short or .22 Long Rifle) are your rifles?

The “27” on your Model 56 is the barrel date (1927)

I just bought M57 #8723. 22LR. I have not removed the stock to get the barrel date code. The forearm is pinned. Can you reply with the manufactured date?

ETA: Sights are ramp front, v-notch rear and Lyman 42W peep. Front and rear sling swivels

Hi Shawn,

Congrats on your purchase!

Thanks for the data, your rifle was very likely assembled in 1927 but will possibly have a “26” date code on the barrel instead of “27”.

The “ramp front” sight mentioned is throwing me for a loop.  The 57 came standard with a 93B “shark fin” front sight.  Can you post a picture of your ramp sight?
