Michael,#1 has a checkered steel buttplate.
#2 and #3 are plastic.
Should #3 have a checkered steel buttplate?
Thanks!
SN 252500 is VERY early for the plastic butt plate. That number corresponds to 1957 serialization but the plastic butt plate is not consistently used until about 8000 SN’s later in very late in 1958.

Michael,watched 2 61s sell at a local auction:
246400 .22 S, L or LR steel butt plate grooved receiver 98% $1,600.00
3346808 .22 Win Mag plastic butt plate grooved receiver 98% $2,500.00
Hope this helps.
Kevin
Thanks Kevin. I had seen 246400 previously. The other is a knew one. Did you mistype one too many “3’s” in that SN?

Hi Michael,
I picked up a Model 61 yesterday chambered in 22 WIN.MAG. R.F.
Plastic buttplate, grooved receiver, about 97-98% condition.
Serial number 284886
If the “story” was true from the family it was bought, it should be a new serial number for your list, as it was said to be in the owners closet for many years.
If not, that’s okay – I’m happy to have it all the same!

It stood a good chance of having the W.M.R.F. barrel stamp! Here is a small portion of my spreadsheet showing the caliber stamp styles on these early magnums.

I don’t believe I entered this one;
1) 813123
2) Round
3) .22 S L OR LR
4) No
5) No
6) N/A
7) Black Plastic
8) Yes
Note: Prior temporary custodian cut the barrel badly, but the front site was reinstalled perfectly, so I had the barrel cut again to 21 inches so it looks better.

Kevin,
Please check that serial number. There are one too many digits in it.

Hi Michael,
I was going through my files and found this Winchester invoice with 5 Model 61 serial numbers that started life as a G6101R for your list.
Best Regards,
It’s interesting that Guns DOM between the two cases is 9 years apart based on the SN’s!
Michael,
Both cases of rifles (Model 74s in the first case and Model 61s in the second case) have serial numbers that indicate that they were manufactured in the year 1950.

Bert is correct, the first case serial numbers listed are Model 74s.
The Winchester invoice was stamped “Paid” on March 9, 1950.
Interestingly, H. G. Lipscomb Hardware Company is still in business – https://hglipscombco.com/
I have other Winchester invoices to them, their dealer # with Winchester was “W 480” in case anyone runs across that number in the warehouse ledgers.

OOOOPS! I was in the middle of baking sourdough bread and getting ready for a 30 mile bike ride. Trying to squeeze a bit of Winchester work in the middle of it all.
