Bert did you see the 1885 in 577 eley yet?

I did… that was one of Winchester’s Ballistic lab rifles, used for ammunition testing.  I even have a single cartridge for it!

For comparison purposes, the cartridge on the left is a .577 Eley, center is a 50-110 Ex, and a 50-95 Express on the right. The second picture is the .577 Eley next to a 22 CB (the largest and the smallest cartridges made for the Single Shot).

This may be the same cartridge Bert is talking about?   The 577 Nitro Express with the 3″ case is 4″ OAL with the 750 grain bullet.  The Win 50-140 with the 3 1/4″ case and 465 gr bullet is 3.94″ OAL.  The Win 50-110 is only 2.75″ OAL.

I’ve followed this topic with interest, but as I don’t display anything I have, I don’t have my eye toward trying to acquire one (or five Wink).

However, as do many threads here, twists and turns can occur.  I really enjoyed the photos of the .577 Eley cartridge.  A couple decades ago I had the opportunity to purchase a Winchester Single-Shot in this cartridge.  It had condition issues but was an original .577.

My question, did Winchester ever manufacture cartridges in .577?

As to the longevity topic that emerged in this thread, I know I’ve not yet reached my, “expiration date” but surely I reached my, “best buy date” some years ago.

Good question, and my guess would be Yes, but in very small quantities.  In total, Winchester manufactured at least (11) Single Shot (high-wall) rifles for the 577 Eley cartridge.  Most of them went to India.  In all the years that I have been scouring and haunting gun shows, I have only had my hands on (1) rifle in that caliber.  It had a massive 30-inch No. 5 barrel.  I really wanted to buy that rifle, but the seller was asking way too much for it ($40K). After seeing it, I hunted down the single 577 cartridge I have in my collection today.

That sounds like one heck of a .577 rifle.  I would surely love to have it.  If I recall, the one I could have had was around $1500 but it had been reblued (not, “restored”).  Still, in hindsight, I should have gone for it.  What would be amazing to see would be a full box of .577 cartridges manufactured by Winchester.  Such a thing may have never existed, but if it did, the odds that such a thing is still around is probably less likely than winning he Powerball.

If such a box exists, my bet is it would be the flat 10-round type box versus the standard 20-round vertical box.  If I ever find a box, I will own it!

If they packed those in 20 round boxes you would need a ammo man just to carry the one box!

Having 20 of them in a cartridge belt wrapped around your waist would be impressive.

The original 11, .577 caliber Winchester high walls, have to be considered one of the rarest Winchester rifles to have ever been manufactured. IMO!

For our friend Bert to even see, and handle one of these amazing examples at $40,000.00, is something to behold in itself.

Here’s a Non Original, Custom Engraved and custom stocked by a couple well know craftsman, at a fraction of that price.

Do you know what the case length is?  I believe the .577 came in 2 different lengths with the 3″ being the longest.

The 577 Eley cartridge I have is 2.75″.  Both the 45 and 50 Eley cartridges are 3″.  For comparison purposes these should help.

Bert,

Those are some great , and hard to find examples!

Along with this custom made specimen, in .577 Eley, a set of custom made dies, and some 3″ Jamison brass were included.IMG_5512.jpegIMG_5511.jpeg

Nice!  It would be relatively easy to trim that Jamison brass down to the correct length for the original 577 Eley cartridge.

Tony –

That’s a great .577.  And it even came with dies!

I enjoyed all the photos – thanks for posting them.
