Sam,I personally would have pitched that magazine tube in the junk pile and replaced it with a new one that I would have purchased from Numrich (e-gunparts.com).
Bert
Agreed. The old tube will never look as good as a replacement and the cost is minimal compared to the time and materials it will take to get the old tube presentable. Homestead May also have replacement tubes.

I suppose it is, but painting the tube will provide better protection to the steel.
I am going for the paint option and need some clarifications please :
1-What kind of cleaning need to be done?
2- Is the paint regular spray paint?
3- do I paint the part that still has some bluing?
Thanks

The steel needs to be perfectly clean (no active or dormant rust, and no oil present). I would dunk it in an acetone bath to clean it. Paint need only be applied to the surfaces that are void of bluing.
What kind of paint(not very familiar with paint).
Black automotive primer paint (in a spray can).
