I have seen some of the first two or three episodes and in the beginning it was called “Ponderosa”,  then the show was quickly renamed “Bonanza”.  In these earliest episodes, Dan Blocker (Hoss) wore his pant legs inside his boots and carried an original Henry rifle.  Joel McCrea also used an original Henry in the movie “Union Pacific”.

“bimbos flaunting themselves on the red carpet” ……….what’s not to like?

Anyway…..I grew up in the 10 cent admission matinee era as well. If I was good my mother would give me 25 cents on Saturday. That would buy admission to the theatre and enough left over for a small soft drink and a box of Cracker Jacks. I recall seeing the magnificent John Ford westerns on the big screen like She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and even if they weren’t historically accurate the scenery was out of this world as were the actors! On occasion my WW 1 veteran grandfather would take me through the tunnel under the Detroit River to Detroit and we would go to the likes of the majestic Fox or Michigan theatre to watch a western usually preceded by the news reels.  I scrimped and saved for months to be able to buy a Hubley Cowboy cap gun available only in Detroit at that time and I was so happy when I had it in my possession. The Canadian $ was worth $1.05 US at the time.

Of the modern westerns my favourite has to be the TV series Lonesome Dove but I also enjoyed Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven and  the Jeff Bridges  True Grit.

Back in 1965 I had an opportunity to meet John Wayne when I and the other crew members of a PBY Catalina flew some groceries and other supplies to an oil exploration camp operated by Richfield Oil  located on a lake near the Hudson’s Bay coast. John Wayne was a significant stock holder of Richfield apparently and went to the camp because the Lake Trout fishing was excellent. Unfortunately he was out on the lake fishing when we unloaded the supplies so I never got the chance to see say hello.

Their lunatic-fringe politics, which, thanks to the adulation they receive from the left-wing media, is broadcast & promoted as important “news.”

If I could own any aircraft in the world, it would be a Catalina–the most versatile flying machine ever invented, I believe.  (And during the Pacific war, quite deadly to Jap shipping at night.)

I have never let politics interfere with my appreciation of beautiful women or any other form of art.

The PBY or Canso as we call them in Canada is indeed a very versatile aircraft. It has an illustrious history in WW 2 locating the Japanese fleet prior to Midway, saving many of the crewmen from the USS Philadelphia and as an anti submarine aerial escort during the Battle of the Atlantic and in all theatres of the war. Until the arrival of the Canadair CL 215 and 415 many were converted to water bombers and a few were still around in that service into the 1990’s. The example I spent most of my time in is a Consolidated Vultee PBY 5A which  is now restored in the livery of the New Zealand Air Force and is still flying at air shows.

Not a western but If interested this same aircraft CF-JCV was used in the documentary “The Last African Flying Boat” .

Met John Wayne when he was filming McQ at the beach where I grew up. I have photos of him with my mom and grandma. Parts of the movie were filmed in the home of friends, and many highway scenes from our roads. They used our local sheriff dept in the movie also. I have his autographed business card.

Clarence is right on Politics 100%

The Lunatic Fringe ( CNN Etc. ) will not relent – even as a Canadian I’ve never seen such a sickening non-stop attack on a sitting President in all my life.

I like Donald Trump, and I love the USA – If I were not so old I’d beg to move there in a heartbeat.

I had the privilege of spending a day at the Smithsonian Institution a few years back and I got to see Abe Lincolns’ Henry Rifle serial # 6,

and so many other beautiful items of World history ( not just USA ) that I had tears in my eyes half the time.

It’s all real, and it’s all there.

Be thankful that you have the 2nd Amendment to your Constitution, and the NRA to fight for your best interests going forward.

Up here in Canada we are not so fortunate… ( Liberal Socialists are now running the Country – with a Hard-Left, Anti-Gun Agenda )

D.

But tonight in Canada – Jesse James – 1939, and the Return of Frank James – 1940 ( Both with Henry Fonda before he went hard-left in the Grapes of Wrath )

are on “Silverscreen” Ch. 337

Come on David,  “Grapes of Wrath ” is one of the best movies ever made as was Steinbeck novel of the same name. I even call my old relic motorhome the “Joad mobile” in  honour of those poor dust bowl refugee “Okies ” who crossed the arid west for a better life in California much like the Mormons or Oregon Trail pioneers.

Canadian gun laws ,while sometimes a nuisance like that gun registration system for long guns, have never been a hindrance to me enjoying the shooting sports but we must remain vigilant to ensuring unreasonable laws governing their ownership and use such as the proposed ban on handgun ownership are not enacted.

Grand parents on my mom’s side made the trek west from Kansas during the dust bowl days. My grandma claims she knows why they call them, “The Rocky Mountains.” The loaded down model A was running poorly in the high elevation. Grandpa would rev the engine and let the clutch out. The car would lurch forward. Grandma had a rock she would put behind the rear wheel. When they finally made the summit she stood straight up for the first time in hours, and fainted dead away. From carrying that rock up the ‘rocky mountains’

My maternal grandfather made that journey, but his family stayed in Okie-land, which was well, because he only lasted about a yr in Cally before dying of TB in a migrant camp.  (Probably had it before he left.)  Rest of the family did the smart thing & moved instead to Texas.  But my paternal grandfather, after working (like my father) all his life for a Texas oil co, retired to his old home town in OK; guess he missed the tornados.

Clarence, Hmmm…. well it is on YouTube. In the film you would see that the side “blisters” as we called then are still attached although the nose was modified and the machine guns removed 🙂 Sorry to take this thread off topic.

A number of years back Dianne and I were touring west Texas and New Mexico. We happened by chance into ,I believe it was called Alamo City N.M., may be wrong on the name there, this is the Mexican town with the bell tower down one street and the western plains town down the other, however they were filming gunsmoke 2, the movie, and everyone was dressed in period costume and gear,  Apparently a lot of westerns were shot there, High Noon etc.. Any way I wanted to get My pic taken in the jail cell and when We walked in the Marshall’s office I’ll be damned if James Arnes wasn’t in  there doing some planning for a scene. He was a very personable fella and a pleasure to talk with and when He shook My hand His hand made My hand look like a midgets, He made a .45 Colt s.a.a. look like a dinky toy, he was very large in stature. Best of that whole trip I got My pic taken with James Arnes locking Me in the jail cell. All a very pleasurable experience as it  was probably my favorite weekly, western t.v. show back in the day. A shame though I didn’t get to meet Miss Kitty or Chester or Doc.  I had a similar pic taken on the front porch of Wyatt Earp’s saloon in Tombstone Az., right across the street from the O K Corral, holding a nice deluxe ’73 rifle I’d just purchased over in Yuma. All those old shows bring back fond memories of simpler and easier living times. Eh?

Clarence I think we all agree on this but I watch some of the “elitist snob awards” just to look at the girls.

I always liked the movie Hombre and the 1873 Paul Newman had.  He should have shot Frank Silvera and then Richard Boone when he had the chance instead of letting them get down the hill.

The Grapes of Wrath is an excellent Movie, well shot , well acted and well put together. But that doesn’t negate the underlying Left-Wing Message of the film.

In Fact, both Daryl F. Zanuck – Producer, and John Ford – Director ( Political Conservatives both ) were very worried about Anti-Communist Backlash as they contemplated production.

It was only the start of World War 2 that temporarily distracted Red-Baiting Sentiments and when Zanuck investigated and confirmed the hardships of the Okies he figured things would probably be ok and that he could defend the picture.

Steinbeck himself, a Great Writer but a complete Left-Winger – eventually awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom by LBJ.

Henry Fonda – Great Actor in many Western Movies – Father of “Hanoi Jane” and Peter – the apples fell close to the tree…

Chuck,

Speaking of Paul Newman and the movie Hombre. Did you see the January WACA calendar with the Model 1873 he used in the movie?

I have now.  I put the calendar up a few weeks ago and did not pay attention to the picture.  I have seen a lot of Stembridge movie guns and a quite a few are messed up too.  These guns are usually marked with a “S”.  Not to say this is one of them.  There were a few prop houses that were used in the industry.  But the box of ammo on the calendar is a Stembridge box.

Most of it is so absurd, so fantastically overdone, it’s laughable.  But think of the idiot millenials who grow up thinking that’s what “reality” actually looks like.

Yes you’re right !

And without going totally off topic this is what Left-Wing Hollywood is now using as a tool against us in their never ending “Anti-Gun Campaign”.

Even the recent film “Winchester” about the life of Sarah Winchester – was an “Anti-Gun Propaganda” period piece and not a very good one.

The depicted “mass shooting” at the Winchester factory never happened to my knowledge. ( Video Garbage )

But that’s what you get from a British Actress and an Australian Director – check the Gun Regulations in those two countries for an eye opener.

AND up here in Canada we’ve got dark days ahead too.

Anyway, back to movies, all you need is a good story, historically correct guns, good horses, 1 or 2 pretty girls, a few twist and turns and as long as good triumphs over evil everything will be just fine.

I’ll have to watch the movie again, as I don’t recall any such scene, but I believe you. For what its worth, I did stumble across an old press photo of some kind of shooting that happened at the Winchester Club Building on Henry Street in New Haven, Ct. The building was a factory building used by the employees for recreation type activities. But this took place in 1966.

1.jpgImage Enlarger2.jpgImage Enlarger

The photo was posted for sale on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG735-1966-Wire-Photo-WINCHESTER-CLUB-SHOOTING-Crime-Scene-Crowd-New-Haven-CT-/184040598675?nma=true&si=Bb7dXOWb%252Baq5pIfrWFZzZcHM8Bg%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Don’t know much details, other than what is typed at the top of the photo. But hey, it was the turbulent 1960s!

Sincerely,

Maverick

The referenced scene from the film was about a Confederate Civil War Survivor getting revenge for the death of family members killed by the Henry Rifle.

At least that’s what we saw in Canada.

I seem to remember that in some of the older (late ’50s or very early ’60s) Bonanza episodes, Henry rifles, or more probably clones thereof, were used. But my 65 year old memory………….

OK, not a Winchester but as a teenager I was fascinated by the Colt revolving rifle carried by Arthur Hunnicutt’s character in El Dorado.

Those Henry looking rifles used on Bonanza, were nothing more than Model 92 Winchesters with the forend removed.

There were two versions of Winchester 73 made .The first with Jimmy Steward  in 1950 and the other made in the later 1960s.Just forget who starred in the late 60s version, but do remember watching it.Smile
