…to start reloading for a 1876 40-60, dies seem to be difficult to find. Wondering if 40-65 dies from the 1886 can be used. Brass / bullets are not a problem supriseingly. If

…when the 1886 came along chambered for the more powerful cartridges it was marketed as a stronger action and the 1876 was perceived as weak by comparison.

I had never read a report of this testing before…

….  Quite interesting.  Very impressive.  I had no idea the 1876 would withstand the level of stress that it did.  I suppose I've simply been a reader of parroted material all these years.

… I'm a new student here.

But I thought it was only the earliest 1873 that had an iron receiver and they switched to steel before the 1876 came out? I have not heard of iron framed 1876 before, interesting.

One day I would like to own a genuine Winchester '76. But for now I'm

Steve,  the Model 1878 military trial rifle musket was an attempt to gain the elusive government contracts the Winchester always wanted.  Houze's 1876 book has an appendix that covers the Model 1878 musket and the military trials.  The trials ended with the Hotchkiss being accepted for limited use…

….

The Cody Firearms Museum has the receiver from the trial Model 1878 musket.  If you didn't know any better you would think it was a standard 1876 receiver.  It's a wee bit longer.  There are a couple of photos in the Houze book.

The old chestnut about the Model 1876 action being too "weak"…

… for the .45-70-405 black powder cartridge is just nonsense. Pirkle even repeated it in his book on the Models 1866, 1873 & 1876.

Interesting.  I've always heard Winchester wanted a lever action repeater that would handle the .45-70 but the M1876 action would end

An interesting topic.  The Model 1876 action was plenty strong enough for any factory cartridge that Winchester loaded for it back in its heyday.  The experimental Model 1878 used the …

….45-70-405 government cartridge and was strong enough for it.  The Model 1878 was a lengthened Model 1876 action used for 1878 military trials.

I don't know exactly when Winchester changed from wrought iron to steel for the Model 1876 receiver. …

…the time noting the change.  We know that Winchester didn't like to waste parts so they would have used up the iron receivers.

Probably the Model 1876 changed to steel receivers in the 1882-83 time period when they went to third model style receivers.

Neither Madis or Pirkle in their books

…referring to what Winchester called the Sporting Leaf Rear sight.  It was available for the Model 1873 (graduated from 100 to 800 yards, the Model 1876 and Hotchkiss (graduated from 100 to 1000 yards).  Probably used on other Winchester rifles as well.  I think with the leaf flat, the notch is…

…the 100 yard setting.  Raise the leaf and with the slider at the bottom and that is 200 yards, etc.

Here is one marked 2 to 10 and 1876 at the top of the leaf.

… I have bought three Winchester black powder guns with blown chambers, 1873 44-40, 1886 45-70, and a 1876 50-95. Don't know how they did it but all three blew out down cracking the receiver to the magazine hole. This makes it very difficult to unscrew

Well, there was a recent thread involving a Model 1876 that had exploded and there was no mention of the load and if black powder or smokeless powder?

Test done 1877.

Have these blown up using smokeless powder?  Or was it black powder?

Many claim it’s okay to fire mild smokeless loads in any Model 1873, 1876, 1886, 1892, & 1894.  I’m not so certain.  I tend to err on the side of caution and generally don’t fire smokeless in anything prior to about

Most certainly they were iron. The test was also done in 1877.

I am not aware of Winchester using steel for the 1876 at any time of their production, but maybe they did...

…Handbook" by George Stone has dimensions of the set trigger parts.  As I recall, there are some differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd models.  The 1876 set triggers use some of the same parts.
