What is kind of funny is I drove 2 1/2 hours to go to that store. Appointment only. I am obviously no Mod. 64 expert but I brought a nice standard one in 30-30 to compare it to. The lack of receiver sight holes had me puzzled. August showed some pictures of 64s in a book with out drilled receivers. Gun looked nice and I have been after 25-35. I like loading and shooting these old calibers.
I doesn’t bother me that y’all picked up on the flaws. That’s why I put it out there. Now I know a little more. When this gun leaves my hands it will be as an altered gun.
It be interesting if there was a GunFax. Kind of like CarFax. Bad idea the government would have one more tool to go after this hobby. Can you say South Africa Australia New Zealand.

Yes, it sucks to be suckered but if anyone told you firearms collecting would be easy and safe they lied. If it was anyone could do it and the really good stuff wouldn’t be expensive and hard to find. It really is a nice gun in a cool chambering but in today’s market it isn’t what a discerning collector is looking for. I think at some time in the distant future collectors won’t be so demanding but I have no assurances of living that long so I’ll invest in reference books and cultivate relationships with collectors much smarter than myself.
I hope your next acquisition goes better but I really like the gun so I guess it’s not all bad.

I found another model 64 in 25-35 WCF for sale–see attached. Comparing the caliber markings, they are quite different. Were there multiple caliber stamps/dies being used in that timeframe? Or is one not a factory applied/altered caliber marking?

Car Fax is not a good example. This entity only knows the information that is input into the system. NOT all the information is in their files!!!

The caliber marking on the rifle DV2 has is one of the clues to it being a Fake. No, there was only one style of caliber roll marking used through 1950.

I just read Steve Barnett passed away in November 2020. The gun shop is now being ran by his son August.https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/dailytimesleader/name/steven-barnett-obituary?id=9515780
“Steve was a long time resident of West Point where he owned Steve Barnett Fine
Guns. He was a world-renowned primary player in the secondary fine gun market. He was always one to greet you with a smirk or a smile depending on the circumstance. His love for his family and friends was remarkable, and his wealth of knowledge on firearms impressed many and surpassed that of an encyclopedia.”
Has anyone here dealt with his son?
