To All Whom It may Concern,
I pose a general question for members of the Board, the President, and other members of the association.
Can the association produce a Directory of its Members?
Obviously this would be for Association Members Only. I think it would be a helpful and fruitful endeavor. I would love to know which fellow WACA members are within driving distance of me, or be able to call or email fellow members that are willing to discuss Winchesters. Not everyone can always travel to the association meetings, but at least members could meet fellow members in their local area.
If such a Directory is possible, I personally would like to see listed deceased members as well, if that is possible?
I know the association currently lists / announces in the Collector magazine New Members & recently Deceased members. As far as I know a complete Directory hasn’t been produced since the 70s or early 1980s by the association.
I can understand if not every member of the association would want to be listed in such a Directory. But surely there could be a mechanism for them to opt out if they so choose.
Can the association Poll the members to see how they would perceive such a Directory?
Or possibly could this be voted upon by members? Just like when we have elections for Board members or some other mechanism.
I understand we have a decent sized membership and this maybe to much to ask for, but I still pose the question.
Sincerely,
Brady Henderson

Some would perceive that as a handy shopping list for thieves looking for nice gun collections.
The “location” field for the user names already allow the user to share their general or exact location should they choose. Not many folks (including you) are explicit in their location description though, possibly for the reason above.
I agree though that it would be a nice directory for us honest folks.
I am in the Southwest US if that helps.

It would be nice if each of us would update our information. We can PM each other to find out more information but I too wonder who some of these people are and where they live. I don’t think house addresses would be necessary. BUT a lot of WACA members don’t get on the Forum so we have no way of contacting them.

This subject comes up from time to time. The answer to you question “Can the association produce a Directory of its Members”? is yes. We did have a directory as you mentioned but it was dropped before I joined in 1992 so don’t know when that was. We have polled the membership previously as to whether the WACA should undertake the considerable expense to again publish a member directory. The response was 50/50 with half the membership voting to not do so. We could undertake to poll the membership again but I expect that the results would probably be about the same. As an aside, the Colt Collectors Assn. used to publish a detailed spiral-bound membership directory which also indicated the member’s collecting interest. The CCA discontinued the directory several years ago. It was quite useful but also also quite expensive. I would guess that the cost to produce and distribute a similar document today would be in the $20,000 range.

Thanks Rick. What if the directory was online? Wouldn’t that be less costly?
Responding to Chuck & Manuel – I would be in favor of formulating a voluntary on-line directory forr those who wanted to participate. Understand that this would be a small percentage of WACA membership as most of our members are either not computer literate or choose not to use the website for some other reason.

I’m a member of TGCA and at one time we polled members and allowed them to opt in and choose the amount of info they wanted in the directory. I think the project was stalled as I haven’t seen any results. I’m pretty easy to find but I can understand why some members would wish to be a bit vague about their exact locations.

You can never under estimate what a criminal will do.
On the old forum (Yellow & Red Colored Version) my location was listed, and why it is no longer when the new forum was created? I do not know, but honestly hadn’t gave it much thought to have it shown.

To All,
I am also a member of the IAA – International Ammunition Association, which has been around for more than 55 years. They produce a Directory I believe Yearly and as far as I know now, it may only be a digital one. Which a member if they so choose can opt out of. Now granted they only have a membership of over 1,300 people and their directory is 60 pages long. But I’m currently unaware of how many active members we have. I believe we have membership numbers over 9,000, but how many of those member #s are no longer members or still active?
Their Directory has 5 sections.
1.An Alphabetical Roster
2.Geographic Cross-Index
3.Speciality Code Cross-Index
4.Dealers
5.Email Listing
All of the Admin are listed in the Directory
Also the Directory is for Members Only, and supposedly anyone caught giving out their Members Only information is subject to loose their membership.
Granted there is always two sides to every coin, but I just thought it may be helpful. I don’t see why we couldn’t do something similar.
Sincerely,
Brady Henderson

There were 2581 in the last membership report I saw from June of 2018. We may have gained a few more from the Cody Show but its been averaging around 2600 the last few years. I agree with Rick in that the only likely option is an online voluntary file, but its going to be a very small fraction of the membership due to exposure limitations and the fear of sharing personal info (addresses, email etc.) with strangers even though they are WACA members. To be the devil’s advocate, I will remind you that there is no formal vetting process for membership to WACA so anyone (even folks with bad intentions) could possibly have access to your info if you choose to share it. I like the idea, but I’m not sure of a good way to accomplish it and maintain a sense of security with the program. My nickels worth….
