Reference: Leyton Yearout’s Winter 1983 WACA magazine article.  136 made.  Circa about 1965.  Could be a M88, M70, M1200, M1400 or a few others.  Fancy hand carved and hand checkered Fagen wood.  Some metal plating and engraving.  Not a Winchester factory produced project.  It was unclear to me if Winchester just provided the metal or if whole guns were disassembled for the metal.  The, “50” stood for the 50 different states.  Leyton states, “It consists of a “Limited Series” of custom hand crafted and hand engraved Winchester Arms using deluxe checkered woods.”  “The project was originated under the direction of a young engraver named Robert (Bob) C. Kain.  “This was all accomplished prior to the beginning of the ‘Commemorative’ type arms.”

I’ve never seen one.  Anyone here?

I used to see them at shows here and there , Florida etc. along with the Commemoratives . Robert Kain was one of the fellows who did the engraving for the Marlin Centenial matched pair in 1970.

Henry –

I thought of you when I posted this as you have had the largest collection of Winchester Commemoratives of anyone I’ve known.  I figured if anyone had seen one, you had.

I’m out of town but finally got logged in. Interesting shotgun. Seems a great example if a person collected those.

I’m not into Winchester pumps but I’m within an hour of that auction so have been attending the previews for the last 18 months or so.  At first glance the receiver reminded me of a Browning Double Auto.

I noticed that shotgun and will take a look at it.  Sorry I’m not qualified to comment on condition, if refinished etc.

I am curious about Model 21’s but have not made the commitment yet.

I think the American 50 series was an interesting concept and I’ve enjoyed reading about their development and history.  However, they are not old enough for me to want to collect them.

I did get a look at this one today.  Very nice.  Just a touch of powder residue on the bolt face.

Otherwise close to pristine.  If you really want one this could be it.

Hammer price $450.  Add Buyers Premium and your at $540.

I watch auctions and see that prices vary widely but this is a valid price point at this time.

As it wasn’t modified by Winchester, I suspect a lot of collectors wouldn’t be interested.
