I’m a new member and have a question, I just acquired a 1894 25-35 Winchester octagon barrel and I noticed a small hole just above cartridge loading spot. I was thinking a rivet/screw was missing. I have seen many photos of this rifle with same open hole. Ok here’s the question, is there something missing ?

thanks for any info.

Mike,

First off, welcome to WACA!

If your receiver looks like this, it’s completely normal.

Welcome Mike!

If your receiver looks like BRP’s it is WAY above normal 😉

I tried to add pic, obviously not technical enough 🤷 but thank you blue ridge, still curious why there is an open hole ? Mine doesn’t have engraving on stock, production date is 1899.

keep your powder dry

That hole is only used for disassembly of the lever from the bolt.  When the screw on the opposite side of the receiver is removed, it allows for the pin that links the bolt and lever together to be pushed out.  I hope this explains the hole in the right side of the receiver.  RDB

Welcome, Mike!

Keep trying on the picture thing, I believe there’s a tutorial around here somewhere. You’ll probably find it while exploring the site. I struggle to take a decent pic but I like seeing them!
