I have found an interesting 1892 SRC locally that has a crescent rifle buttstock. The barrel is 20” and the front stock is s correct carbine style. Could it have came that way or has the original carbine buttstock been replaced? The rifle was reblued at some point but is mechanically sound with a nice bore. The saddle ring is missing but the staple is there . I don’t have the serial number yet. Thanks

Hello Cliff,
The Model 1892 SRC’s were quite often made with a special order Rifle butt stock. In a similar but opposite configuration I have seen numerous OB sporting rifles with 20 inch barrel and carbine stocks on them. Some of these also have a sling ring attached to the left side of the receiver. The rifle in question could certainly be original but would have to be looked at carefully. If you can supply me with several photos and the serial number of the rifle I will be happy to take a look at it for you. If the rifle has a SN of less than 380,000 you can always check with the Cody Firearms Museum.

Well, since I am not a collector of museum quality Winchester’s, I went ahead and bought this rifle as a shooter. It’s actually much nicer than I thought. Nice shiny bore with good rifling, very smooth action, hasn’t been overly buffed, and a good wood to metal fit. The wood is dry so I think I will just apply an oil finish for now. I need to find a saddle ring for it. The rear folding sight is missing the sliding part for elevation. Doubt I’ll ever find one of those. Here are a couple of pictures. The serial number dates it to 1902. Is that a bit early for gum wood?

You can letter that serial number, you know! I’ve had a couple of ’92 SRC’s that have actually lettered with rifle butts. You never know, till you check.
Absolutely and I Just ordered one. When you order online , do they email the letter to you? Been awhile since I ordered one.
The letter is just that a real letter with a official seal. It will take about a month to get.
