Here’s one of those guns/letters that has one scratching ones head. Ser#4665, received in the warehouse before it was ser.#’rd. 1 of a collection of 6 ,’86’s I just purchased.20220305_194106.jpgImage Enlarger20220305_194115-1.jpgImage Enlarger20220305_194153.jpgImage Enlarger20220305_194235.jpgImage Enlarger  Question; would this gun qualify as a 1st. year production or not.

I don’t believe anyone ever said the records were perfect!  There were Monday morning hangovers, or something,, that entered into the equation at times.  But I DO love the flowing, artistic writing of the record keepers.  Tim  Oh, yeah, I have one record for an 1873 that was shipped a couple of years before it was made.  The letter is annotated “as it appears in the records”!

In these type cases, I always like to see a copy of the ledger page, as you have to remember the Cody Letter is an interpretation of the Researcher tasked with looking up the serial number. They too make mistakes as well. You never know where a ditto mark or something may have been missed.

Sincerely,

Maverick
