…. I don’t have an 1886 at the moment but I feel pretty certain the next one will be a 33WCF. If I’m truly fortunate and find one I can afford in 45-70 I pretty well have that cartridge covered.

Like this one I just found. Seems to be a Model 70 220 swift new in box and never fired. From the serial number it looks like it was made in 1961?

Wait... I can't seem to add the photos.

Tell Santa Claus you need Venturino’s “Shooting Leverguns of the Old West. He lists 170gr CB loads for the 32-40 using XMP5744 that run a little over 1400fps. My loads generally run about 1500fps but I’m still working on that.

…I note that my Lyman Loading manual does have a .32-40 section. They do not include any cast bullet data.  All of their data is built around the 170 grain JSP.  Of note, they list seven different maximum loads, and not a single one breaks 1900 fps.  Some don't break 1400 fps.  Again, these are

…for the response, I already started to restore it, the wood is gorgeous and the metal is better than I thought. The serial # is 157087. what little research I did dates it to 1916. Sucks they modified it with the Lyman compensator.   It will look nice on the wall.

This fellow's top load was 30 grains of H335 and he suggested 27 grains as a starting load.  He reported, "Shoots one inch below a 170 gr. Silvertip load."  And he added, "Great for animals that need lots of penetration like bear."

I have not tried it, John lost me at the single loading. 170 is about as heavy as I’ve gone for 30WCF and 32WS. I wasn’t able to find a 311284 mould when working up loads for the 30US but my 312299 drops

…can be used. Brass / bullets are not a problem surprisingly.

Thanks

Absolutely not... the 40-65 WCF cartridge is a necked down 45-70.  The 40-60 WCF is an entirely different dimensional cartridge.

…Winchester for the 30 WCF was 1:12 and as such, it will not adequately stabilize a 220-gr bullet.  The optimum bullet weight for the 30 WCF was a 170-grain bullet.
