As the topic title states, I am looking for an original Winchester or Ideal reloading tool to pair up with my original Single Shot (high-wall) rifle in 40-70 Sharps Straight. The tool does not to be in high condition, but it must be in usable.

Hi Bert! There is an Ideal tool listed on E Bay, along with two other tools. I have not mastered the art of transferring links with my new tablet! Do a search for ’40-70 sharps’ and it comes up.
I already found it, and it is not a complete tool.
Thanks,
Bert

What is it missing?
The only one on Ebay I saw looked complete to me. In the second photo you can see the sprue cutter on the bottom. But the photos are not the best to say the least. Can’t even make out the caliber markings.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Any intrest in a Winchester cherried mold? Drops a 40-265 paper patched bullet.

Thanks, but No, I am not looking for a bullet mold. The correct bullet mold for the 40-70 Sharps Straight drops a 330-grain .403″ bullet.

A lot is missing. The Ideal tools should have (4) separate screw in dies.

Hmm? I wonder what what this mold is for then. Originally I got it to go with my 86 in 40-70 wcf, but was told it is not for that either.

The mold is for the 40-50 Sharps and would work in either the 40-50 Bottleneck or Straight.
The 40-70 WCF came out in 1894, and would only be available in the 5th Model Mold. It will be simply marked 40-70.
In the 5th Model Mold when finding the 40-70 for the sharps molds, they’ll be marked 40-70 REG (40-70 Regular = Bottleneck) or 40-70 S.S. (40-70 Sharps Straight). Then further marked with a G or P for grooved or patched. Sometimes without the G marked they will be grooved, but usually almost always the P is marked for patched.
When look further back into the 4th & 3rd Model Molds, these will also be simply marked 40-70 usually for the grooved bullet and the patched is marked with a P or may even have Patch or Patched spelled out.
The 2nd Model mold due to its design could only cast a patched bullet and for the 40-70-(330) Sharps is marked thusly.
Some guys want some crazy money for these Sharps Molds, if you look closely you’ll notice the price tag for the 40-70SSP mold is not $12.00.
Happy hunting for the proper mold!
Sincerely,
Maverick

That is flat out insanity… $1,200 for a single cavity bullet mold !!
I’ve seen 1st Model Molds go on Ebay for that & more, on multiple occasions.
But agree that for a 5th Model Mold even for in a Sharps caliber, is a little excessive to say the least.
The mold pictured was for sale at the Tulsa show about 5 years back. I don’t recall it actually selling though.
Sincerely,
Maverick
