I have no idea. It’s definitely darker than the rest of the receiver. I inherited this from my grandfather; I know he never did anything to it, so if it was replaced it probably would have been done before the 1950’s (best guess).
The receiver is case hardened, where the loading gate is blued. Its not uncommon for Model 86s to look this way, at all. Most of the case hardened finish has worn off, while the rest of the bluing remained in good shape. Nice looking old gale.
