I just came across this old gun. The specs: Winchester Model 1912, 16ga, Serial#5026, barrel length 26″ with adjustable polychoke, barrel is marked FULL so polychoke installed as aftermarket. This is a takedown model. The most unique feature on this shotgun is the forend/slide handle. I cannot find any info in the Madis or West publications. A quick description of the slide handle as follows: Overall length in 7 inches. Two black diamonds of ebony, on the sides with point style checkering in the center. At the rear of the slide handle is a protruding ring of darker walnut that has been pinned to slide handle with ebony pins. Any info about the maker or origin of this slide handle would be greatly appreciated.

James,

Just like the Polychoke, the slide handle stock is an aftermarket alteration, and undoubtedly an custom made piece.

Thank you for the quick response. I was wandering if you may have any ideas of any custom gun makers that did this kind of stock work. I just updated my post with some pictures, sorry about that I am new to posting. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

James,

There were at least several hundred “custom” gun builders that specialized in doing the type of stock work you describe. Determining who specifically did the work on your Model 12 is a needle-in-the-haystack type of search, and pointless.

Looks to me like the work of more than one gunsmith, at least one of them was very talented, IMHO. My best guess is a previous owner was a pretty serious skeet shooter.
