Hi
First post and fist time viewing your website. I was wondering if anyone knew how many rifles like mine were made. Ok tried to post pictures, not having any luck. I’ll try to describe. It was made in 1906. Condition is excellent 44-40 take down Deluxe pistol grip . Never refinished or touched up wood is excellent. Don’t know what else to say. I did post pictures on Gunboards.com They steered me over to this site.
Thanks
Tony

Tony,
I would be glad to help you with with your question. See below for the information I would need. You can also email your pics directly and I can help try to post them. [email protected].
I am currently working on an article on Winchester 1892 takedown rifles so you picked the right place to ask your question.
If anyone out there has an 1892 takedown rifle the would like to add to the survey I would request the following information (or anything additional that isnt covered in the list below:
- Serial number (full number please. Partial numbers are of no use because if you have one rifle with x’ed out serial numbers I may have a similar rifle with same serial number (full or partial) that could be the same gun, or a different gun. Partial serial numbers dont work.
- Caliber
- barrel shape (oct, 1/2 oct, round)
- barrel length (from face of breech to muzzle)
- If short rifle, does it have 8 3/8″ forearm or 9 3/8″ forearm
- factory matted barrel
- Magazine length (Full mag, 2/3 mag, 1/2 mag)
- buttstock type (crescent, shotgun, swiss, other)
- if shotgun butt, what type of buttplate (hard rubber, smooth steel, checked steel, serrated steel)
- magazine tube length (full mag, 2/3 mag, 1/2 mag)
- whether it is a deluxe (with or w/o pistol grip) checked style (H style, I style, unchecked, or other)
- wood grade (plain, X, XX, XXX, etc)
- if letters with special order sights (what types are they)
- sling eyes
- set trigger
- engraved (which pattern) or inscribed
- if letter states it was converted from a rifle or carbine into a takedown rifle.
- Maxim silencer (yes, no)
- Any additional factory letter information that may be pertinent.
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for posting the pics Tony. If you could provide a serial number, or email it to me, I may be able to provide a little more information than what I have below.
Of the takedown rifles in 44-40 (n=94), I currently have six takedown deluxe rifles with pistol grip stocks (no straight grip checked), three are “H” checked as yours is, and three are “I”checked (plus 2 fakes). The three that are “H” checked are as follows:
- 44-40, 1/2 Oct bbl, Shotgun butt, 1/2 Magazine, PG, H-checked, monogram, fancy wood
- 44-40, Round bbl, Crescent butt, Full mag, PG, H-checked, engraved, fancy wood
- 44-40, 1/2 Oct bbl, Crescent butt, 1/2 mag, PG, H-checked, fancy wood
So, yours would be the only one so far that has an 44-40 octagon barrel, PG, H-checked with fancy wood. Note that there are others like yours I have seen but was unable to obtain the serial number for my survey. And, there may be others as well that I just havent seen yet. I would like to add yours to the survey, please forward the SN if you can.

Hello Tony,
I am working on a survey of all the configurations of 1892’s and was wondering if I could get a detail photo of the barrel address, upper tang and the serial number also? Please send the info to the red email in this link:

Chris,
I have a couple 1892 takedowns to add to your survey:
Serial # 716191, 44 WCF, 24″ octagon barrel, full magazine, straight grip non-checkered standard crescent butt-stock, standard sights
Serial# 932021, 32WCF, 24″ round barrel, half magazine, straight grip non-checkered standard crescent butt-stock, standard sights plus Lyman tang sight
Thanks,
Don
Wow!!! Thats all I can say. Absolutely beautiful gun sir. I bought the same gun about a month ago but not in that condition. It was a 100% disassembled rescue with a rag stuck in the bore and so much gunk in the checkering you couldn’t see it. Well, I’m proud to say I went and shot it 10 times yesterday and it was great! Serial number 34289. H checkering with pistol grip. XXX wood. 24 full octagon takedown. Great gun sir!

Hello Mikec,
Could I please also get a series of photos of your rifle so that I might add it to my research?
Thanks

Tony,
If its marked, it will be on the left side of the lower tang with X’s other wise its a judgment call as to what grade of wood you have.
