Ben-
Since you asked… First, I ain’t got that kind of money; and second, I ain’t that stupid… So NO… I was not involved at any pont…
This auction came up recently on this Forum.. IMHO it’s another auction fluke… M70s, even at RIA, are NOT suddenly worth more than 10X their high estimate… If that were true, then I’d be rich!!! I’m NOT…
Like Ben says it was two guys with deep pockets butting heads… One on-line and the other on the phone… Doubtful either had seen the gun in-person, but maybe they did??? SG Carbines were never cataloged and without (nonexistent) documentation they’re ALL suspect. If I wanted to I could “create” a SG Carbine tomorrow that (almost) nobody could “disprove” b/c I have a “spare” Carbine and a “spare” standard Super with serial numbers within 10,000 of one another. I like the guns the way they are…
I’ll say this again b/c it was suggested before… I know (with certainty) that the bidder who got the Ulrich engraved “RCS” Model 70 220 SWIFT in the last RIA Premier Auction (the one that set the “new World’s record sale price for a M70), was NOT involved in sthis latest rodeo… THAT guy knows his guns!!!

I was there, you can see the funny looks on the RIA employees’ faces. Guy in the white shirt sat with us at dinner Thursday night. FYI Bidder 22 is the number assigned to all online bidders. The guy taking the bid may look familiar to some of you, he’s done a few of the RIA videos. I have no idea what happened there other than that gun meant more to them than the big pile of money it took to buy it.

I’m beginning to believe if you have the money, you can buy anything at a RIA premier auction, except a bargain. T/R
I believe there were some good deals to be had but I wasn’t able to closely examine all the guns that went for significantly under the estimated prices. My friend bought a handful of nice guns and most were good deals, one he had a bit of competition for but he liked the gun. I don’t think he’s going to get a kitchen pass again anytime soon but he’s having back surgery in the next few weeks so will have several weeks’ downtime.
I didn’t buy anything. My last check for home repairs cleared Christmas Eve leaving me with less money than most of the guns went for. Bartender was cute and she makes a decent Bloody Mary.

Would have liked to have seen a pic of the front sight
I may be able to help you with that, Ted. May take a day or two.

I’m sorry, Ted. I thought the hard copy catalog had more pics. The images in the print catalog are the same as online. Lot number was 3529.

I think we’ll be seeing that rifle again, Ted. Maybe you’ll get your chance.

Mike – so maybe a speculator bought it – looking to make a profit?
Methinks he’s going to be disappointed unless he knows something about this rifle that most of us (except maybe the other bidder?) don’t know. I don’t think this story is over.
