I believe this is not the original barrel for an 1894 manufactured in the 459,000 serial number range.  It is a proof-steel barrel marked MODEL 94.  I’m guessing this is a late 1920’s / early 1930’s barrel mounted on a 1910 receiver.  Am I correct?

Dropping the first two digits of the model no. began in 1919.

You’d think that for 5 Gs, Leroy would throw in a factory letter; cost of it for him would be a tax write-off.

Problem is it’s outside of the letterable range.  Serial 353999 I believe is the last for the model 1894 letters.  When did Winchester transition to proof steel barrels on the model 94?

The barrel is marked model 94 and I’d guess the tang sight hides 1894.  Hard to believe the front came with the back

It being a takedown the front end being swapped out makes sense. Now was that done by the factory? I don’t know how you’d prove it for certain.

The forearm wood does match the buttstock wood grains and overall it looks well.

Anybody know what the “D” stands for on the lower tang?

Also there appears to be two sets of “Assembler’s Numbers” stamped in front of the trigger on the lower tang, a “69” and “99“.

I’m used to only seeing one set of those numbers. It looks like the 99 was stamped first then the 69 applied next to it later. If anything that could point to the gun having been sent back for a new barrel, those markings are the only thing I see. But that is a thin stretch to say the least and wishful thinking has me wanting more info / evidence.

I also don’t like the additional scope screw holes in the barrel. But that’s just me.

Sincerely,

Maverick
