Without the rifle in hand, it looks to good to be true (unrestored) to me.  Also, from what I’ve seen, the majority of “presentation rifles” were deluxe rifles, not plain Jane standard rifles, as this one is.  Thoughts?

Thanks Bob.  That’s what I suspected.

Poor wood fit, rounded corners and lack of age to the finish.

Seems a decent restoration as far as restorations go. Still may be worth in the neighborhood of the low estimate to some if there’s any substantiated back-up supplied for the stated provenance.

If I was selling it and had good title, I’d track down the decedents and see if they were interested in bringing the rifle home, for a price.

I don’t know about yall, but I find that inscription plate somewhat questionable.

Sincerely,

The rifle wasn’t even manufactured until 1897. How can they have given it to him in 1893?

That gun was serialized in 1893.

If you can’t convince them, confuse them

I have experienced the seller numerous times. Without even looking at the gun, if it is questionable, then it’s not original. Sorry, it’s just that simple…..

I should have looked it up first.  Just went by the sellers description. Thanks.
