And from information recently found on other threads, this one appears legitimately marked:

Steve,

I agree, though I would like to see the warehouse ledger entry for it before I am 100% about it.

Nice rifle but I haven’t a clue how a factory refinish would affect the value. At the moment it looks like a good price for a “shooter” but it’s early.

I think what helps a lot with this rifle is the fact that it is an antique.  The Lyman receiver side adds in value.  On the other hand, it’s not a rare configuration or caliber.

The ledger doesn’t show the Lyman 21, but it does have an R&R in 1904. The order # does not connect to the 666 on the rifle, but with JPP’s marking it sure makes it arguable that the factory refinish is legit. See attached search form.

I agree that the antique status adds value, and I like guns with interesting hidden markings as well. It just adds some kind of hint to the guns history. I like the gun and would be proud to own it.

Is anyone concerned about the writing of the numbers underneath the buttplate being in pencil? Why wouldn’t it have been stamped with the assembly number on the wood as well?

Sincerely,

Maverick

I am not concerned, as I have seen similar pencil notations under the butt plate on several other Winchesters.
