Bob,
This is the same seller from my post "Buyer Beware". He is using two different seller IDs, and selling bogus items with both.

Bert,
I had suspected as such.
I have contacted the bidder with many key and reasonable questions – none of which were answered with sufficient authority – not even their return policy.
I sent this as more of an alert.
I think we may have fun with this.
Has anyone contacted GB or heard anything definitive about this seller
FYI – I asked how they tied the gun to the case and they quickly said the serial number was in "grease pencil" on the other end of the box. As we know, or at least in my experience, a tag was affixed to the box with staples between the box and the lid. They also said they didn’t have the wooden cleaning rod – which is entirely reasonable but……….
Email them and break their chops with pertinent questions – wait till you hear the responses!!!
Cheers,
B
Whoever wrote that number in ‘grease pencil’ on the end of the box was intentionally trying to make it look like the box was the original shipping box. Intentionally misleading someone with the objective of financially profiting from it is fraud, at least in Canada. Fraud is a criminal offence. I cannot say that the seller is the guilty party, however, as he may have purchased the box and rifle himself and is now offloading it. There would need to be some evidence connecting the seller to the production and marking of the box. Nevertheless, I expect the seller is monitoring this thread and well aware that at least one or two of his boxes and tags are sketchy.
This is just the kind of stuff that made ol’ RFW into the great AUTHORITY he is now!!!!
Greedy b%#(&@*d!
If I made on my book what he made on just one of his, I wouldn’t be trying not to be somebody’s "honey" in the hoosegow by being so stupid.
Keep up the bad-mouthing of this other mutt – maybe someone will notify GB!!!!

Read the other thread entitled "Buyer Beware". Seller is a member of this board and commented in that thread. As such, yes, I’m site he is aware of this thread as well.
Matt
I banned his user ID on the WACA website & forums. That does not stop him from reading what has been written though.

You can still see his name of course on the old thread: Taught by Midas.
Well, guess he will not comment unless he is able to sign up under another username, would not surprise me given he did the same on GB.

No where does he say the crate and paperwork are original to this gun, or even original Winchester. I guess he is just selling what he is describing and picturing. You look at it, see if you want what is pictured and described, and buy it if it meets your desire. Every buyer gets to decide what he wants, and how much he is willing to pay. The buyers seem to be happy with their purchases. Some buyers may be getting exactly what they expected, some may be reading more into the auction description than what is there, but they are getting what is pictured and described.

I’m pretty sure he is Implying something by sticking a "Winchester Factory Box Label" on the end of the crate.

I think exposing flaws and irregularities is a very valuable benefit of this forum, and appreciate the learning experience. And exposing fraudulent intent even if only thru implication is a very worthwhile endeavor
My sympathies lie with the Collector enthusiast, rather than the dis honest "Capitalist"

When he says Win. Mod. XX with "THE" wood shipping crate, that’s certainly inferring that it’s the original crate for that rifle. Like the old saying goes "buy the gun, not the story". In this case the crate is just a story, whether believable or not.
"The" wood shipping crate is the crate shown. I notice that in some of his listings he says original box, and in others he says just box or the box. In some he says "the package" referring to the box and paperwork. 100% feedback, so his customers are happy with the "package" they got. Are his guns very much overpriced in their condition, adding extra for a "display box and paperwork".
Still no admission or pretense that this gun and this crate are original together. The serial is not discernible on the crate nor are there any photos showing the gun in the crate or the interior of the crate at all. Very pricy as well, but you can haggle hard with Cabela’s as they usually really nail the original seller and have lots of room in their pricing.
I’ve had reliable and notable friends report of 100% markups over what is a known purchasing price. Quite often, but not AS, they screw up in the other direction as well.
Their "experts" are NOT!!!!
Just think of how many outlets they have and then try to imagine employing a true expert (in all arms) in each of them.
I have made "a few" real good buys through them (when they screw up in the customers favor, it’s often on SAAs) AND, I have seen some people really get hosed too.
Enjoy the thread.

I don’t like the looks of that Cabela’s shipping crate, something certainly seems off with it also.
