My guess would be it had a undocumented return and repair. Would guess is the barrel and rear sight are newer. And possibly the elevator.
The barrel address was not put in that location during the 1882 timeframe. Also the elevators generally weren’t mark for caliber yet. If its the original elevator it would be one of the earliest marked ones. I’ve seen them marked in the later mid-90,000 range . Also in the 88,000 range would make it an early 3rd Model receiver.
Maybe when it was re-blued a serial number got buffed off and its actually a higher serialized gun?
Odd indeed. Maybe its a good shooter?
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. Maybe Bob will chime in, as he knows them well.

Randy C spotted the problems with that one and sent me the link. Its a second model tang in a third model receiver that has been refinished. The barrel is a late replacement with the markings on the side and proofed. Its possible its a undocumented Winchester return & repair but it would take close examination.
