I’m fairly certain on the Model 1873, that the Tangs both bottom and top were the same length during the entire production.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

The first model 73s were straight grip with different cuts for the lower tang. The late guns after 550,000 had a different butt plate, shorter top portion. So for your gun you need a 2nd or third model pistol grip stock with either crescent or shotgun butt plate depending on how your gun letters. The top of the butt plate has to be the long type, not short like a 94 if crescent. If shotgun butt be aware that shotgun butt was standard on the 38/40 when it came out, at least on the first ones so it did not state shotgun butt on the letter. I assume you have checked the letter. A pistol grip stock on a gun most of the times was a deluxe grade wood and checkered unless the letter states its a plain wood. Here is a stock that would be correct for your gun if it letters as a deluxe. It has the long tang to the butt plate with a cleaning rod hole. What is the finish on the metal because if is case colored it would of been a stock like this.

Silly me, I was thinking about the Receiver Tangs and not the length of the butt plate tang. TR and Bob are on the money, as usual.

If there is no mention of any finish in the letter its considered standard finish which is blued. Also the front sight looks like a Rocky Mountain.
