Michael,
I just bought 1892 serial number 277385. I don’t know if it’ll be useful for your survey other than just as a number in the list because it is currently, and will be allowed to continue, masquerading as a model 53 in 25-20. It’s still in the mail so I only have a couple auction pics. It does look to have type 2 tang markings.
Nathan
Thanks Nathan,
I did see that rifle for sale on Gunbroker. The original configuration was a round barrel, 1/2 mag in 25-20. So you are not too far off.
Thanks, and Happy New Year

Happy New Year to you too and thank you for letting me know how it originally looked!

Hello Nathan,
Can you post (or send me) clear pictures of all the factory markings on the barrel? I am very intrigued by the fact that it has a hooded front ramp sight.

Here you go Bert. I believe it’s actually just a Model 65 barrel and a 53 stock, a real serious Frankenchester. Someone remarked the barrel 92, trying to counterfeit some kind of special order I guess?

My guess is that it is a factory replacement. It has a correct “92” over stamp on the barrel and no “Oval/P mail order proof stamp.

I agree that it is a remarked Model 65 barrel. It should have a 2-digit date (year) stamped on the bottom of the barrel that will help pin down when it was reworked.

OfflineI had posted this in the wrong post and moved it to here.
I’m not sure if you have this in you’re survey or not. I have in my notes, from a long while ago, Winchester M-1892, serial number #779, (in the standard configuration), as issued by Winchester, and as a patina all original rifle, that an old friend had, and sold years ago, to a gentleman here in Ohio. I remember having the chance to buy it, but passed on it at the time, maybe 15-20 years ago. I contacted my old friend asking about it, along with another rifle he had/has, as he’s not really a Winchester guy, but he wasn’t home, and said he would get back to me on it. Nothing more in my notes on it!

Anthony,
That rifle has not resurfaced since I started working on this project 13 years ago.

Michael,
For the M-1892 Survey;
Serial number 783, with the standard 24 inch round barrel, and half magazine, in the .25-20 WCF caliber, with a crescent butt.
Anthony
That cannot be the original barrel… way too early for it to be a 25-20 WCF.

OfflineI stumbled across this thread while looking up 92 Winchesters. I just got back from a gun show, and picked up 2 92s, a 32-20 and a 25-20.
Ended up joining the Winchester site so I could add to your database. Im a little ignorant to tech things, so I cant post pictures, or even know how, but will try to give as many details as requested.
The 32-20 is a takedown model, serial number 391667. It has a 24″ octagon barrel. The tang is stamped model 1892, then WINCHESTER, then trade mark.
It has a crescent buttplate, the Winchester proofs are in line from reciever to barrel, and in between them it is stamped 32 WCF. The rear site is a standard buckhorn, with step elevator. Front site is a dovetailed brass blade, looks period correct. The barrel stamp is the 2 line style, first line Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co, second line New Haven, and patent dates.
Ive been collecting guns over 40 years, and what caught my eye on this one was it was just honest and unmolested. All the screws are untouched, the takedown is extremely tight (as in not broken down many times) and the wood is in fantastic shape, no dings, cracks, or splits. There is 1 small pressed indent up by the end cap, but thats it. The wood to metal fit is excellent, I havent scrubbed the bore yet, but to my eye, the lands and grooves are crisp and sharp.
I make my own home brew of Ed’s Red, and it seems to do the best on the older iron.
Ive got a few more to add, but ill have to try again tomorrow, ol ladys fussin shes cold, I gotta hold the flashlight while she fetches the firewood
Yall take care,

Hello and welcome HB,
I saw SN 391667 about ten years ago for sale out of a place in Montana. It is a good unaltered rifle. You better keep that lady warm!!

Tony, some of us old timers don’t sleep well, so don’t assume he is in bed nor that I am for that matter! Tim
I agree Tim, as I sent him a request for some pictures, and explaining the pictures needed. He’s had some health issues he’s been dealing with as many others do as father time seems to induce. So I told him their was no hurry on it, so we’ll see!
