OfflineHi
Thank you for the information. I didn’t have that serial number recorded before. I looked at the RIA listing to see the rest. Wondering if the buttstock was replaced at some time also. Thanks again.

It’s definitely been to bubba’s shop, but it doesn’t shoot bad.
Thanks,
Adam

OfflineHey Guys I recently rescued an 1895 serial #63530 standard rifle in 405.
High condition—very well preserved
steel buttplate shotgun style
Lyman 21 rear sight
standard looking ramp and dovetailed front
Marbles Sheard gold bead sight
Matting on the top/front of the reciever
The 24 inch barrel appears to be of high quality but is definitely not OEM
no upper proof mark—stamped 405 WCF on top
underside of barrel — AP DUNN 988 with a clean and proper dovetail arrangement to secure the forend
I will do a little more research—there was a story about the barrel I didn’t follow up on.
Whoever did the gunsmithing was a pro—no signs of “Bubba” anywhere

OfflineI’m not aware of any that were originally .236 Navy. There’s one that was apparently rebarreled at some point from .30 U.S.

Brad, I’m putting together info on all the pre 64 cartridges that are listed for all the Models that are unusual in anyway and are not the standard calibers.
Do you have any info you would share?

OfflineBrad – I have obtained an 1895 in 405 that appears to be an early version of this caliber in this rifle – what do you think?
• Serial number 43982
• Type: Standard rifle
• Chamber: 405 WCF
• Barrel type and length: 24” round
• Sights: standard sights? Marbles U-notched rear and Sheared front
• Buttplate type: shotgun steel
• Special order stocks: no
• Any special markings and engraving – British proofs and Laflin & Rand stamp with load data
• Historical provenance – none
• Other information or noteworthy special features – got non official letter from Cody that confirmed caliber and buttplate type – received at warehouse April 24, 1904 and sent out April 28, 1904
thanks,
John

OfflineHi John
Thanks for the information. I looked at your other forum thread about your rifle. Looks nice! The sights shown in the GI listing appear to be the standard Winchester front and rear sights.
If you were wondering about the dates, I believe the earliest .405 serial number was 5496, but it did not go through the warehouse until March 1904. The earliest with serial numbers and similar warehouse dates start in the late 30000 seral number range. There are a few from 1902 and 1903 in the survey, with warehouse dates at least as early as 1903.
Thanks!

Thanks Brad. It just shows to go you that you can’t believe everything you read. Over and over I’ve read 1904 for the first 405s in the 1895. First advertised in June 1904. I need to get your book.
