I recently obtained this rifle thought you may be able to use it’s statistics.
Model 1895, sn 108471, 24″ round barrel, 30-06, Lyman #21, standard rifle, rubber shotgun butt plate, fold up 2 leaf rear dovetail mount sight
I think that’s the pertinent information, if you need anything else let me know.

I recently inherited this rifle, hopefully this info is useful. I didn’t know anything about these rifles before getting it so correct me if I’m wrong. It seems like a pretty early 405 judging by the serial number and I’m curious where it puts it with the other documented ones.

Yes, 34652 one of the earliest serial numbers for a .405. The very earliest is probably 5496, sn applied in December 1897, but with warehouse dates in March 1904. The earliest warehouse dates seem to be mid-1903.
You might want to double check the serial number applied date with the Records Office. I looked at some other factory letters around that serial number range. I think it might be 1902 instead of 1901.

So I’m guessing that some receivers sat around for a few years and were given the 405 barrels? I thought that the 405 was introduced in 1905?

This is no different in the same Model 95, as the .35 caliber was introduced well over a year before the catalog introduction, as stated in Rob and Brad’s Book.

1904, but first listed in the 1905 catalog.
Thanks Bert. A number of Winchester’s firearms came out before they were listed in the catalogs. At least the catalogs that are presently available. I believe that not all of the catalogs were found and copied.

Bert, I have basically the same list. I’m sure you have the ones by New Haven Arms started in 1863/5 too. Maverick has a long list of catalogs that are not in the 12 Volume set.

Why does that not surprise me.
Is this catalog actually marked #39? The earliest I’ve seen is #43. June 1887, Arms and Ammo. There are many Win Catalogs that are not marked.
