Bert, The measurement you asked for is 3/4″.

Does this measurement indicate an original factory length?

Yes it does.

Is the forend stock 9 ⅜” or 8 ⅜” long?

Interestingly, it is right in the middle of a large batch of Spruce Guns.  The vast majority of the Model 1894 SRCs in the 840000 – 852300 serial number range were 30 WCF.

Thanks!

Bert,

I recently picked up s/n 194285 and just got the factory letter. Here’s the information if you don’t already have it:

s/n applied for Sept 28, 1903

Type: Rifle

Caliber: 38/55

Barrel type: Round

Trigger: Plain

Received in warehouse: October 21, 1903

Shipped from warehouse October 26, 1903 order T108824

This was a stripped receiver that I bought to rebuild. Of note is that it has a saddle ring but records indicate it’s a rifle not a carbine.

I’ll be searching for a period appropriate round barrel in 38/55 if anyone knows where I can find one.

Hello everybody, this is my 1st post as a new member. Thank you all for creating such a great forum!

Bert, I joined this forum because I own a Model 1894 that was handed down from at least 3 generations of family members of mine. The serial number is much earlier than those that you are surveying. To your knowledge are you aware of any other surveys for earlier 94’s? I would like to find out as much as I can on it for general interest and curiosity only. Thank you.

If the serial number on your Model 1894 is < 354000, you can obtain a factory letter for it from the CFM records office.  If the serial number is < 8000, I would like to add it to my research survey.  Currently, I am surveying all serial numbers in the following ranges; 1 – 7999, and 354000 – 2600011.

The CFM records office has the original Winchester warehouse ledger records for all of the serial numbers in the 1 – 353999 range, and they can (for a modest fee) provide a Factory letter with all of the details originally recorded in the ledger record.

Thanks… I had it previously listed in the survey.  It was manufactured in mid-February 1942 1941 and was very near the end of the “W’ marked Model 94s.

Thanks for the follow up Bert, as I put the model and serial number into the WACA Forums listed information section on verifying the date of mfg. and it came up 1941! Not sure if you had it listed or not.

I typo’d the date… February 1941 is the correct date.

Hi folks, long time reader, appreciate all the great info I’ve gathered here.
I have something interesting for your survey; 1894 serial # 672925
No saddle ring, 3/4(4 shot) magazine, express 3 leaf rear sight, good matching walnut stocks, curved crescent short tang rifle butt plate.
Too early for “Eastern carbine”? Maybe a SRC someone ordered with options?

Cheers, thanks.

Can you send some pictures of your 1914 production Carbine to me?

Bert,

Model 94, Serial number #1060690, mfg. 1929, is a standard .30 wcf, 24 inch round, Nickel Steel barrel, full magazine tube, standard sights, wood, and the normal smooth contoured military steel style, rifle butt. The rifle was refinished as an amateur quality done job, but done well enough to make it a good shooter/hunter. Didn’t know if you had it or not in the Survey.

Hmmm… are you sure that it has a 24-inch barrel?  Standard length was 26-inchs.  I am confused by your description “the normal smooth contoured military steel style, rifle butt“.  Are you referring to a standard crescent steel butt?

Bert,

My apologies on the description of the rifle itself as it was explained to me. It’s a 20 inch Eastern carbine. With the standard carbine shotgun style smooth butt.
