Recently saw for sale a box of .32-40 ammunition with 165 grain Silvertip bullets. The box appears to be a box that Winchester unloaded .32-40 cases came it.It has a label on the end that says .32-40 165 grain Silvertip.
Did not know that Winchester made a 165 grain Silvertip bullet for the .32-40.There are pictures of the cartridges and they are Silvertip.
Does any one know if Winchester loaded .32-40 165 grain Silvertip ammunition, or if 32-40 165 grain Silver tip bullets were available for hand loading?
I know Winchester made silver tip ammo and I’ve seen boxes of 32 SPL. I believe they still make silver tip but I don’t know if they currently make 32-40 silver tip? The silver tip was made as far back as the 1950’s. I just don’t pay attention to post 1900 ammo boxes.
Edit: I looked in Ray and Dan’s cartridge book. It appears that the Silvertip (high expansion) bullets came out in the mid 40’s. They do show 30 WCF with the silver tip too.
As far as I know the old Silvertip is no longer in production for most of the Winchester catrtridges it was ionce made in.Perhaps when a run of .348 ammunitiopn is made .it could still use a Silvertip bullet. All the other cartridges come in what I believe is called, Power Point.Basically soft point.
I had thought the 165 grain .32-40 was only made in soft point. This box I saw said 165 grain Silvertip. The box appeared to be a cartridge only box,but had a sticker on the end with the Winchester W that said 32-40 165 grain Silvertip.Do not know if this was factory or some one loaded it.Even so if it were hand loaded, where did the 165 grain .32 Silvertip bullets come from?
One possibility is that some one loaded 170 grain .32 Special Silvertip bullets and just said they were 165 grain?
I’m sure the bullets were available when the ammo was being sold. Someone may have had the box of bullets and used some of them in a 32-40?
Here is what Winchester is currently selling as a silver tip.
