OfflineZeb-
Foul Out does not affect steel, I found a few cans on the shelf when I was looking for the Iosso. I utilized the bore scope partly because I could feel something with the nylon bore brush. I’m very aware of the hazards of a bore scope but I have no idea how that little bit of pitting happened. If someone had fired some old surplus corrosive ammo I think it would have had pitting from one end to the other. I may use Iosso or JB to polish the bore to reduce future fouling.
We have some ugly weather coming in this weekend, looking forward to working on a few projects in the room where the magic happens. Have some brass to sort and maybe some 35 Whelen cases to load, may even clean another rifle or two.

OfflineYeah, we are still recovering but I did get out to cover the faucets and put the hoses away. A good day for hot oatmeal and the man cave.

OfflineThree applications of Foul-Out removed most of the fouling and the JB paste removed the rest and polished the bore a bit to hopefully slow down future copper deposits. Gonna be a few days before I’ll venture out to check the impact of my work, so to speak.

OfflineTime to put this project to bed. I’ve discovered the bore needs 5-6 fouling shots but have found a load it likes. Pretty sure it’s an old stock Hornady 165 spire point (found them in a bag in a loading bench cubbyhole) and 55grs IMR4350. Seems I took the long way around the barn, my hunting load is the new version of that bullet over the same charge of H4350. The “bargain” factory second bullets proved the factory QC folks knew what they were doing when they rejected this batch of bullets. They’ll make good foulers. Seems El Diablito Rojo is probably as good a shooter as his older sister was. I suppose that shouldn’t be a surprise either. I could maybe shave as much as another tenth of an inch off the group size with a better scope, some minor tweaking and probably a better shooter. I just wanted to see what I could do with a bargain rack Winchester hunting rifle using an inexpensive scope, cheap bullets and a powder I happened to have a surplus of. Any excuse for trigger (and loading bench) time!

OfflineIt also speaks very well.for the action design, itself.
If you want to see what the rifle can do in the best case, find a box of that Winchester Palma Match and fire 4 @ 5-shot groups. I don’t know if it is still loaded with mercuric primers or not but the box will surely be marked. It is said to be the most accurate 30/06 ammunition ever made.
I would bet the accuracy would be eye-popping. I’ve seen what the .308 version can do for a National Match M14.
