Are you announcing that you are giving out Writing and/or Research Grants?

Oliver-
Never written a book but have been close enough to the process to know it takes lots of time and persistence. Nobody wants that book in your hands more than the authors. I’m going to have to take my vitamins to live long enough to use up all the components I just found. I think I’ll be around long enough to read a few more books.

Well, do you have this one?
You NEED that one. Everybody does. And get the hard cover version.

"I have seen wicked men and fools, a great many of both, and I believe they both get paid in the end, but the fools first." -- David Balfour, narrator and protagonist of the novel, Kidnapped, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Oliver,
I have a survey on Winchester Reloading Tools, with the intent to one day have a book on the topic. But it is slow going to say the least.
Another avenue I’ve been interested in is Winchester Factory Gauges, Jigs, & Tools, etc. Which I think would make an interesting book.
I’m also kicking around the idea of an Winchester Shot Shell book, one that would be somewhat of an update to Ron Stadt’s book and expand upon it further.
Also thought about a book on the Winchester Factory itself, which Pauline has a book on and there again would like to expand on further.
So would you buy a Book on the Winchester Factory, Winchester Shot Shells, Winchester Factory Gauges, and/or Winchester Reloading Tools?
If so, which one would you buy first? Or none at all? What would you pay for such a book?
Is there a particular Winchester subject you would want to see a book about? A particular model not already written on?
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. For now I’ve merely stuck with trying to write articles for the Collector magazine. Which is a fun endeavor!

Waiting patiently for the book on Winchester Reloading tools and molds.
Thanks for the extensive list Maverick I would be interested in all provided they are in depth and in reference form . the price would be according to how informative each book is . It would be nice to see books written extensively on the models 1886 and 1892. John Madl’s book on the 86 is great but a more in depth book similar to Robert Rennebergs 1894 book would tickle me . Books are as important as the Winchesters themselves. Put me on your list if you decide to go ahead with any of the ones you mentioned . I think a re-print of Stone’s 73 handbook would also be welcomed .
Cheers

I haven’t purchased Madl’s 86 book, will have to look into getting a copy.
Twobit is working on a 92 book. Bert’s working on a 85 book. But understanding is these things take a while to get right, I think Bert has been at the 85 book for over 10 years. Is that right Bert?
Which I completely understand, you want to get them right as possible. When speaking with Dan Shuey, he was working on a Shot Shell book for over a decade, but he abandoned it in 2008 and again in 2013 or so. Of course I think he started to have a love hate relationship with the book. Nicknamed it the Sh!t Shell Book. Which some days I completely understand. Which is why I think Dan ended up writing / submitting more and more articles. He has over 30 in the Collector and over 50 submissions in the IAA journal.
Oliver,
What about Stone’s 73 handbook did you enjoy that you would like to see updated on? Is George Stone still alive?

You’ll have to settle for an article or two for now. Tom Quigley and me will have one coming out soon on a Prototype Patent Tool he has.
I’ve contemplated finding a good partner to co-author or an editor to work on with the book. We’ll see what the future holds.
I’ve often thought that if George Madis’ Book could be redone, that would be a good book to see redone or updated. Especially in full color!
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. I wish the best of luck and support all the other guys that have research surveys. Which I think the Collector can always use another good article.

Have you looked at The Encyclopedia of Shot Gun Shell Boxes by Ted and David Bacyk? There are quite a few Winchester boxes pictured. This more of a price guide. Not any data on the ammo.
Own it. Yeah a nice picture book at this point. Price guides are doomed to be out of date before they even hit the printer. But some publishers require that they be included. Shuey said they would not have put in the Giles and Shuey ammo box book if the publisher hadn’t insisted on it.
Sincerely,
Maverick

I note that Maverick asked Oliver ‘Are you announcing that you are giving out Writing and/or Research Grants?”
I am curious – are there Research Grants available to research data, such as in the Cody Museum?
My interest is that I expect to publish a book about the Model 1200-1400 and subsequent series of Winchester shotguns (1960-2006) late in 2025, and need to spend some time at the Cody Museum.
I am an Australian, and gathered information on my last visit to the USA in 2018 – but the Museum was closed for repairs. My planned visit in 2021 had to be abandoned, as has this year’s proposed visit. However it will happen in 2025 as there is information there essential for the book.
This is not a new project as I have been advertising in the Collector for information since 2017, and I have personally funded all the research and travel to date. If you wish to correspond about this my email is [email protected].

There’s a concept with some merit, Keith! As I understand it writing about old Winchesters is a labor of love. With limited number of collectors who would buy a book and the number of hours spent researching, writing, re-writing, obtaining photographs, correcting issues found by editors, dealing with publishing companies and promoting the book the numbers as I guesstimate them to be are not encouraging. Since the guns we love are no longer manufactured the only people who will benefit from the publication are collectors, dealers and possibly auction houses. Some books have indeed been written by museum curators and I can only assume the museum was somehow involved fiscally. Museums do fund research but in my experience they are often very much involved In the process or at least supervising it to be good stewards of their funds. I think we’d see more books in a timely fashion if there was funding available to folks so they could focus on producing the books we like.

Here is an old list of my Winchester books. I know it is a few short of what I actually have.
Does look a few short.
Anyone know of one that I am missing let me know. I love books. Just finished the The Book of Rifle Accuracy by Tony Boyer. Tony has won more bench rest matches than anyone, ever.
Oliver,
The next book in the Winchester .22 Bolt Action Repeating Rifle series is on the Winchester Model 75. It is just about complete (need a few more specific photos) and should be going to the publisher later this year or early next year (depending upon my work schedule). I will be giving everyone an update and some excerpts from the 75 book at the Cody Show banquet this coming week.
The next 2 books in the series are on the Winchester Model 56/57 and the Model 72 and I have already started both of them but still need some examples of the harder to find examples for photos. If anyone has a Winchester 72 Dual Sight they would like to have photographed and included please let me know as I only have 2 of the approximately 6 Model 72 dual sight variants in my reference collection as they are very hard to find.
Best Regards,
