Bert, what is up with the two different forends around the band area?  I mean the bottom one has the piece of metal in the wood.

Chuck,

That strip of steel is a “spring clip”, and it is what retains the barrel band.  That style of stock was used on the 2nd variation (high-wall) Winder Muskets.

The 3rd variation Government contract Winder Muskets used a transverse band screw to retain the barrel band.  The stock on the upper Winder Musket in your picture has been cut down.

Thanks Bert.  The spring clip is what I was wondering about.  The other side of the stock has a small hole in the wood too.

Mike,

An original 3rd variation “U S” ordnance marked Winder Musket that is in decent (unaltered) condition is a $2K+ gun these days.  Consider that it is not just the “Winchester” collectors that are looking for them, as the “Military” collectors also compete for them.

Bert

Bert-

My “US” 3rd variation doesn’t quite make the 80% cut because of bluing loss on the receiver but is original. The Cabela’s in Centerville, OH had it for $850 in early 2018 and they were nice enough to box it up and ship it to me. For some reason I thought they could still be had for $1500 or less, interest may be a little less around these parts. Apparently I should keep a lookout for underpriced specimens and bring them up to Cody where they are more appreciated.

Mike

Mike,

If you Winder Musket is ordnance marked, you can just about double your $$$ on it.  Yes, you should most definitely keep your eyes open for any that are underpriced… I will even provide the Cash if needed so that you can acquire them!

Merry Christmas, Bert! Figured we’d see that photo again and it certainly brightened my day. My example is indeed martially marked ( or as Cabela’s described; “marshal”) but until or unless a better example comes along it’s not going anywhere.
Thanks for the offer of operating capital, cash is a bit scarce right now considering I’m in the ice business and getting ready to retire from my day job!
