Does anyone know when “Winchester Gun Grease” was introduced and starting being sold? Also wanting to know when Winchester Brand Gun & Machine Oil, Rust Remover, Crystal Cleaner, Utility Oil and Leather Dressing starting being sold?
I’m relatively certain that “Gun Grease” was being sold Pre-1890, but not 100% certain on that. I only have a small catalog collection and plan on buying the volume bound set that was produced a few years back. But for the time being am wondering if anyone knows this information or knows another good source reference to find it out.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Anybody else got any older catalogs? Or anyone with a fairly complete catalog collection mind looking?
I’m fairly certain Winchester Gun Grease was being sold Pre-1892 as I have seen original gun grease ads inside of 1882 Reloading tool boxes that pre-date the model 1892 production. I would imagine gun grease was at the least being sold in the 1880s but currently I don’t have a way of verifying this.

Maverick

Winchester Gun Grease is pictured and listed near the back under “Sundries” at .15 per tube in April and Nov. 1894 catalogs (same as Gary’s?).
Next oldest catalog I have is March 1891, with the Model 1890 on the back cover, and Winchester Gun Grease is not listed under “Sundries” in mine.
Hope that helps you.

Here is a pretty minty 1895 catalogue. Is the 1894 that you have the one that introduces the Model 1894 on the back cover?
Rick,
The November 1894 catalog I have is the Cornell reproduction so it doesn’t show the back cover. The Model 1894 is shown on page 40 as “The latest Winchester repeating rifle”

Ron,
I would very much like to see some pictures and get some more information on the AD in your Diaries.

I have a tube of the gun grease. Composition of the tube appears to be lead with mostly peeling green paint and the box in came in is marked $0.15. Yellowish brown grease that works out to a pretty thin layer on metal surfaces. I wonder how much such greases have changed in around a 100 years.
