Hello All: First time posting. I am interested in any information regarding a serial number and marking on an 1866 Winchester. The serial number is out of rationale and is: 2775 there is a hand engraved Y as a prefix. The rifle also has a stamped “SC” on the upper tang. The 4 digit serial number does not appear to have been ground or filed and is located properly under the lever on the bottom tang. Any help identifying these markings would be a great help.
Thanks, Paul

That is not the serial number. its too low for a 66. Post pictures of the whole gun so we can see what vintage it is. Remove the stock and look at the left side of the lower tang for a serial number. They put the serial number in different places during its production. the number on the lower tang and letters on the upper tang are not Winchester marks

I wholeheartedly agree with Bob, those are Winchester’s serial numbers. As suggested you should find the serial number on the left side of the tang underneath the buttstock.

Thanks everybody for your replies, we did remove the butt stock and no serial # there. We know the serial # rationale should be in the 12,000’s. Was hoping the “SC” was some regimental or militia marking and that someone had seen it before. This item is in our June auction and was hoping for some additional information.

Hello Jeremy: There is actually two 66’s in the June sale. They are in the Saturday session, Lot #’s 2137 and 2223. Lots of other interesting Winchester’s as well: Switzer’s Auction (switzersauction.com)
Here’s the link to the musket if anyone wants to see more photos…
