Back in 2019 I walked into my LGS and asked if by chance he had an 1886 in 45-90. He surprised me by saying yes. After checking out the rifle we agreed on a price and I left with it. It still shows some slight case coloring on the receiver and a beautiful bore. Fast forward to Jan 2022. I had been eyeballing an 1886 in 40-65 that the same shop where I bought the 45-90. That 40-65 is museum grade!! and it has a set trigger! we again agreed on a price and I left with that rifle. I sent off for Cody letters for both. Well I just got the letters back and while i knew they were both made in 1893,I read that they both got the serial numbers applied in Feb of 1893. then I noticed that they were one number apart!! I am interested to know who has serial number 76477? I am wondering what caliber it is in and if it had any special features on it. Thanks Kent
Kent,
You will have to get another Cody letter to find out what its is and who has it is going to be a big mystery.

Kent-
Have you considered asking your LGS where the first two 1886’s came from? It’s probably no coincidence your 1886’s showed up in the same gun shop all these years after they left the factory mere weeks apart, maybe closer. Of course, three guns on the same order having consecutive SN’s is not a given but two rifles one number apart showing up at the same LGS after nearly 130 years is nothing short of remarkable. I don’t remember if 1886’s of that time period had order numbers on the ledger but I’m guessing you’ve already checked that. If you’re a Cody Museum member some inquiries are free, WACA members get additional inquiries.

Hi Mike, I checked the Cody letters and they were both on different order numbers. the serial numbers were put them 2 days apart in Feb 1893. the 45-90 went to the warehouse March 3rd of 1893. The 40-65 went to the warehouse March 25th 1893 and left the same day. The 45-90 didn’t leave the warehouse until May of 1894. my LGS owner didn’t remember when he got the 45-90, but he remembers that he got the 40-65 20 + years ago. Kent
