Erin,
3,300 fps may be “just getting warmed up” in your book, but I like to shoot more often than just once every 5-minutes. Ramming a bullet down the bore at more than 3,500 fps is a waste of powder, and barrel life in my opinion. The loads I shoot in both of my Triple-Deuce Mags are in the 3,400 fps velocity range, and the varmints never know what hit them!
Bert,
I tend to run the flattest shooting cartridges available, 204 Ruger, 17 Remington, 220 Swift, When one starts to get hot I simply switch to another when shooting colony rodents. Nothing over heats and the body parts just keep flying. Velocity is what makes for the best entertainment, double back flips, triple gainers, the rocket launch, etc. I’ve got barrels with more than 5,000 rounds down the pipe and they still shoot very well. When I do get throat erosion, I simply set the barrel back and go again. Depending on how a factory barrel shoots, (If I can’t get consistent 3/8-1/2″ groups @ 100) I will put a premium after market barrel on and finish it at 26-28 inches. (Hart barrels are my favorites) This allows for 2-3 set backs. We all have our way of doing things, but if you are going to own a corvette, I certainly won’t drive it like a Volkswagon.

Don’t think the 22-250 is a bad caliber, I just like less noise and seeing the strike
I am with you… I see no need to burn copious quantities of gunpowder and make that much noise. Maybe I am just being “frugal” ??

As I stated earlier, I use this gun (22.250) for long distance at small targets. Although this is not a big bore caliber, I love shooting big bore guns that have a big bang which is why I shoot out in the country and use hearing protection. I’m trying hard to understand the noise part of this discussion because I don’t even fire a .22LR without ear protection.

Well said, we all have our favorite stuff and all of the aforementioned calibers are very good. To each his own, I hope Rickc got something from this he can use.

Probably a bunch of confusion……. Too many choices. He will have to break it down as to the distances he wants to shoot, critters he is after, noise factor, economics and the list goes on. Lots of factors to sort through before making a (hopefully now) somewhat educated decision.`
It’s the old story of Ford, Chevy, Dodge etc. We all have our favorites but any of them will get the job done.
All depends on the Vermin in question. Snakes, rats, gophers, or like rodents .22 in short or long and also in rat shot. Raccoons, Opposums, squirrels, .22 or 12GA shotgun.
Bobcat, coyotes, foxes, wild dogs, feral cats, and wild hogs are normally dealt with a 30-06 because I see them while deer hunting.
Although I did take a bobcat with 45 Govt’ this year. In Louisiana we have a “Primitive Firearms” season that lets you use single shot rifle of pre-1899 design in .30 caliber and up.
They haven’t open the season here in Louisiana yet for Antifa.

Maverick

I had some fun with a 22-250 probably 30-35 years ago. I was pushing some early V-Max bullets pretty hard over Varget, IIRC and must admit I was a bit puzzled when about one in five bullets failed to make it to my Chrony. Velocity was only about 4000 but twist may have been too much for those early V-Max bullets. It was a triple digit summer Saturday in TX and another shooter asked me how long it would take the barrel to cool. I told him it should be cooled down by Tuesday.
Other than rimfire I haven’t had much interest in anything under .30 for years. 17HMR was fun but the big green R recalled one I really liked and the bolt gun I replaced it with has a rough bore and cleaning copper from a .17 bore is a PITA.
About the only varmints I shoot are feral hogs and feral dogs/coyotes. I like big bores for hogs and I like fast, frangible bullets for nuisance dogs and coyotes.
