Bill,

Can you post pictures of it?  The odds are very high that I can identify what you have.

The 17 on the tang and the stock are assembly numbers.  These are used so the two pieces can stay together during assembly.  Bert will have to answer the question about the stamps on the barrel.  Do you have a pic of the caliber stamp on the barrel?

Bill,

The stamped markings on the barrel are indeed British proof marks.  The “S” stamped on the tang usually indicates a Shotgun butt, and as Chuck mentioned, the “17” is an assembly number.

Bert, I would not have guessed that’s what the, “S”, indicated.  Not sure if I didn’t remember that, or probably didn’t know it to begin with.

Thanks for the Lesson! Smile

Bill’s Single Shot 45 EX rifle letters with a Shotgun butt.  There were (10) identical rifles with the same order # and they all had a shotgun butt (typical for a British ordered Singler Shot).

You are welcome Cool

Based on further research, your rifle was 1 of 10 identical rifles that was built specifically for export to the U.K. (most likely to J. Kerr & Company), proofed, and then sent to the British colonies in India and used as Tiger hunting rifles.

This is another fine example of some very good, time consuming research from one of our more informative members. Many of us WACA members are very appreciative.

Thanks Bert! Smile
