Mike, I better provide some data now, as I won’t have written references in Cody. I have Lyman mould number 375449 from way back. I think it was obsolete last time I looked. I have loaded RL-7, IMR-3031 trying for more velocity. But my old standby of IMR 4198 was and is my favorite. Mostly I now shoot the caliber in a modern model 1885 but with a 312 grain silhouette bullet from an RCBS mould, again using IMR 4198. The Miruku made reproduction has a mirror bore of about .378 and that is the largest I can size my bullets to still chamber, but they do very nicely on silhouettes to 300 yards when I do my part. The latter is the weak link and getting weaker all the time! IF you need more specifics, we need do this NOW rather than in Cody! Cody is for telling tales and perhaps lies at least a little! Tim

No sir, I’ll need my “Load Notes” book, I doubt you will need written references. My Lyman 375449 mould is only a few years old but I could be wrong about that. Oops, just found an entry about it dated 02/09/2014. My mother was good at remembering dates but she’s been gone over six years, I’m at the mercy of pen and paper and being able to find them when I need them. My load notes date back almost 30 years but I started writing stuff down a little too late. My first attempts at reloading would make interesting reading today.

TXGunNut said Not saying I’d open up the chamber of a pristine specimen but if a rifle with a tight throat demonstrated more potential as a shooter than as a collector I’d give it some thought.
To condense a long episode of foolishness I’d prefer to forget, I once bought a Clymer chamber reamer to enlarge the chamber of a very fine .38-55 Ballard Pacific I still own. But then I got cold feet about doing it…I’m not sorry to say!

I understand! As we say we’re merely temporary custodians. I’ve re-cut the forcing cone of a nice 3rd gen Colt and had the chamber re-cut in a well-used 94. Both were necessary to make the guns functional. Some guns don’t have to spend time at the range to earn a space in our safes. Others do. Gotta listen to the voices, I think you did well.

Well, I’ve turned two .32 RFs into .32 S&Ws. Both reversible firing pin Ballards, so relatively easy to do, but chamber reaming by hand was required.
On the topic of loading for the .38-72, I found an old thread on another forum. I think some of our members were contributors. And, I seem to recall w30wcf was John Kort? Anyway, there’s some very fine and useful information in this thread:

Thanks for that link, good stuff. I’ll file that away.
Just to chime in on Clarence’s comments about the foolishness, etc. Since we up in Canada get most of our ammo, powder and reloading supplies from the US, well, you can imagine that is has trickled down here as well. Powder is unobtanium. You just can’t find it. My Dad back in NS tried all the local shops for 5744, they said they can’t get it, and have no idea when they will be able to. Ammo, IF you can find it, has gone up dramatically in price. Any reloading equipment is hard to find.
You guys stop the frenzy buying and craziness so we can get our supply back to normal too! Lol. People do it up here too, but to a lesser extent. I can’t believe the prices I see on GB and places. I have the thoughts about just not buying anything too until the crazy train passes, but it’s hard to kick an addiction!

On top of hoarding & speculation in the private sector, we have the US gov’t making huge unneeded purchases to pile up in gov’t warehouses–back-door gun control without violating the 2A. US ammo-makers don’t HAVE to give the US gov’t, the mortal enemy of every gun-owner, first priority–they haven’t been nationalized–but they cooperate willingly without regard for us–a stab in the back from those we wrongly believe are our “friends.”
“Not buying anything,” in other words, exercising self-restraint, is indeed the only way out of this crisis. In the (far) future, I’ll always buy foreign-made ammo if possible, as I’m never going to forget the stab in the back by the US ammo industry.
Have been able to pick up some reloading things I need ,after a lot of scrounging around on line or posting on sites. The shipping is not the best, but at least I was able to get what I want.Recently was about to get 1000 Winchester large rifle primers on line. The primers are the new manufacture in the new red, black and while box,as apposed to the old blue box.So some new stock must be making it to the stores.

Buffalo Arms has been getting some new inventory in as well. Nothing I’m looking for though.
