What brand of wax or oil do you use on your collectible guns?

How frequently do you perform this type of maintenance?

Do you find it necessary to use a product like Flitz, and if so, please describe how you use it?

I use Conservator’s Wax, a microcrystalline wax recommended for such things. I wax both the wood and the metal at least twice a year and more often if I actually use the rifle.

Thank you for the reply.  I tried to find some Renaissance wax yesterday that was being sold close to home to no avail.  I’ll look for some of the Conservator’s brand today.

I usually clean my guns about twice a year, too, and have used a wax on the metal before, but not on the wood as yet.

Do you use Hoppes or a similar type of solvent on the metal and then dry it prior to waxing?

I’m getting to the point to where I am thinking about preparing some of the higher condition pieces for long term storage.  Would you use a wax for this as well?

I bought a tube of Flitz many years ago that I was thinking about using on a rust spot that had formed where the bluing had flaked, but could not bring myself to try it, so I went back to the old tried and true method of oil and 0000 copper wool just to keep any rusting in check.

I too have a question about the ” long term” storage issue.

I have cleaned my metal before and wipe-dried, then a few days later used Renaissance over the entire gun.

The long term storage question is what, other than bare, standing in a safe storage can be used if the gun is to be protected ( wrapped ) and put away.

A friend has a reasonably valuable gun he wants to store, and I’m not comfortable to recommend the WACA Silcone-Treated Gun Sock in the WACA store.

( I thought I read here silicone is not good for storage. Actually, I think there was a correction of the product in the store before because of that. )

Overall, I believe the gun needs attention twice yearly from storage, especially if it’s covered with anything.

Hi

Old West Snake Oil works best for me. I wish I started using this years ago, as I do not have a museum. Used BREAK FREE for years, which is OK, but I sort of regret.

Thanks

David Kennedy, former curator of the Cody Museum said that they use Renaissance Wax. Conservator’s Wax is the same type (micro-crystalline). I use Hoppes #9 for cleaning the bore or for getting oil residue crud of the externals. I then wipe it clean and apply Conservator’s wax

I have 100 plus guns stored in WACA gun socks in the safe and have had for 15 years or more with no ill effect whatsoever.  Take ’em out and pet them every once and awhile and wipe them down with a thin coat of gun oil or Snake Oil and stuff them back in the gun socks.

Same here, I have the gun socks from Cabela’s on all my guns in the safe and have no problems. I wipe down the guns about twice a year. Like Rick I have used Snake oil or have used G96.

Use Sack-ups gun socks, Snake Oil and BreakFree CLP, never had a problem….

If you can’t convince them, confuse them
