I saw a picture this morning of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau and it looked like he was holding a lever action rifle of some sort but I just heard on the news that it was a Winchester lever action.

The gun fire in the video CNN plays with the reporter inside the building, sounds like automatic or semi-automatic fire. But that very well could have been and most likely was the police shooting the terrorist. I’m sure the media will have more details in days to come. It’s a Terrible tragedy.

I saw that photo of the shooter on the internet the day of the shooting, it looks to be an earlier model 1894 carbine (long forearm, barrel band ahead of the front sight). Notice the media isnt making quite the spectacle of the weapon type here in the US like they normally do? I mean, when they report that a guy had a couple hundred rounds of ammo but no gun, thats a big deal to them (referring to the guy who jumped the White House fence a while back)?
Here is a copy of the news article with pic:

I could make out a barrel band, look by his left index finger, and the tall front sight. I attached an article i found on the net, its almost comical with regards to the “low tech” and “ancient” firearm comments and moderate fire power (30-30). Not to mention comments on this site and others regarding the old Canadian gun registry–basically saying that if they still had the registry they would have already tracked down where he got it from.

I read a news item on his rifle that he actually used. It was a Winchester 30-30. The comments by the RCMP was that it was an archaic, ‘slow-loading’ rifle, that only held 7 rounds, and that you had to load one round at a time, not the type one would want to use to kill a lot of people. I am relieved to hear this opinion, even though he badly underestimates what an experienced person can do with a lever gun. It will keep the gun control people thinking these sorts of firearms are fairly benign.
