The Colt boxes are marked with a soft lead pencil. The box I have does not have the correct serial number on it. If I took my time I probably could change it.
Robert, My box is sort of red/maroon but is all cardboard. I am not sure if the outside color changed but the end label and the inner label did change a few times. It also came with some instructions. You could also get an oiler and a couple other items. if you want a picture of what the box would look like I can probably find a picture for that serial number range. You can buy bad reproductions online for about $40.
Chuck,
Thanks for the info and if you have pictures I’d be interested. As a young guy the last time I handled that box I was probably 12 and I was more interested in the pistol. The box as I remember was just plain cardboard inside the box the label was inside the top and looked like the picture you posted. The end label was similar to what you pictured on your post too. I don’t remember if there was anything else in the box when I saw it last. But my grandfather was an inventor as well as a realtor. He was fastidious about neatness and keeping records. If he bought that pistol at that hardware store I am sure he kept not only did he keep the receipt but any instructions that came with them. Its just a shame that they were not with that pistol.
Thanks,
Rob
